Denmark, Greenland face Vance in high stakes White House meeting

Denmark and Greenland’s foreign ministers are meeting US Vice President JD Vance at the White House in a high stakes bid to defuse a growing crisis over President Donald Trump’s push for the United States to take control of Greenland. The talks follow weeks of threats and comments from Trump insisting that the mineral rich Arctic island is vital to US security and must eventually become American territory. Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen and Greenland’s Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt are expected to present a united front against any transfer of sovereignty. Both Copenhagen and Nuuk say Greenland is not for sale and that any use of force or coercion is reckless and unacceptable between NATO allies. Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen has already declared that, if forced to choose, the territory stands firmly with Denmark. He said the […]

Death toll from Iran unrest nears 2,600, rights group reports

The death toll from weeks of anti government unrest in Iran has climbed to almost 2,600 people, according to a US based human rights group. HRANA said it has so far verified the deaths of 2,403 protesters and 147 members of the security forces and other government affiliated individuals. An Iranian official separately told Reuters that about 2,000 people had been killed, marking the first time a figure in that range has been acknowledged by someone inside the system. The authorities have accused the United States and Israel of fomenting the unrest and say “terrorists” have attacked security forces, mosques and public property. The protests began on December 28 over soaring inflation but have since turned into one of the biggest challenges to Iran’s clerical rulers since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Demonstrations have spread nationwide, with funeral marches, strikes and […]

Trump’s Iran tariff threat risks reopening China rift

US President Donald Trump’s threat to impose a 25 percent tariff on any country that trades with Iran is raising fears of a renewed rift with China, Tehran’s biggest commercial partner. Analysts say the move could drag Beijing back into a trade confrontation with Washington just as both sides were trying to stabilise ties. Trump announced on Monday that his administration is preparing the new tariffs as part of efforts to punish Iran over its crackdown on protests and to choke off the country’s oil revenues. The proposed measure would hit major buyers of Iranian crude and goods, including China, India and several countries in Asia. China has repeatedly criticised unilateral US sanctions and defended its energy and trade links with Iran as legitimate under international law. Beijing is also a key player in Iran’s oil, infrastructure and technology sectors […]

Trump posts self as ‘acting president’ of Venezuela

US President Donald Trump has shared a doctored image on his Truth Social account describing himself as the “Acting President of Venezuela, incumbent January 2026.” The graphic, styled to look like a Wikipedia page, lists him as both the 45th and 47th US president and claims he now leads the South American country. The post comes days after a US military operation in Caracas that saw Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores captured and flown to New York to face drug and weapons related charges. Trump has said his administration will “run” Venezuela and oversee its oil assets during what he calls a transition period. Despite Trump’s online claim, no international body or foreign government has recognised him as Venezuela’s acting leader. The country’s actual acting president is Vice President Delcy Rodríguez, who has rejected US authority […]

BBC moves to dismiss Trump’s $5bn lawsuit

The BBC has announced it will seek to have Donald Trump’s lawsuit thrown out, challenging both the legal basis and the location of the case over how his January 6, 2021 speech was edited in a Panorama documentary. The US president filed a $5 billion lawsuit in Florida last month, accusing the British broadcaster of defamation and of breaching a trade practices law. He claims the programme wrongly suggested he directly called for violence ahead of the Capitol riot. In court documents submitted on Monday, the BBC said the Florida court does not have “personal jurisdiction” over the organisation and that the venue is not appropriate for the case. The broadcaster also argues that Trump has failed to present a legally valid claim. The BBC has already acknowledged that the way the speech was edited created a misleading impression. It […]

Families doubt Venezuela’s prisoner release pledge

The son of an imprisoned Venezuelan opposition figure has urged former US President Donald Trump to remain firm on Caracas, warning that the government has not honoured its pledge to free large numbers of political detainees. Ramón Guanipa, whose father Juan Pablo Guanipa is a prominent opposition leader, said only a small fraction of those jailed for political reasons have been released so far. He believes Trump may not yet be aware that fewer than 50 of the more than 800 reported political prisoners have actually been freed. Last week, the Venezuelan authorities announced they would begin releasing detainees in what they described as a goodwill gesture. The move followed the dramatic seizure of President Nicolás Maduro in Caracas on 3 January by US forces, after which he was taken to New York to face drug-trafficking charges. Soon after the […]

Trump says US will take Greenland one way or the other

US President Donald Trump says the United States will take control of Greenland “one way or the other,” warning that Russia or China could move in if Washington does not act. He describes the mineral rich Arctic territory, which is part of Denmark, as vital for US security because of growing Russian and Chinese activity in the region. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump says he prefers to reach a deal with Greenland’s self governing authorities but is ready to consider tougher options if negotiations fail. He argues that countries should “own” key territory rather than rely on leases, and says the United States must be ready to defend Greenland as its own. Trump has repeatedly suggested that if the US does not act, Russia or China will “take over” Greenland, a prospect he calls unacceptable. He also […]

North Korea says shameless US is making a mockery of UN

North Korea has accused the United States of abusing the United Nations and trying to turn it into a tool for its own interests. Pyongyang called US actions “shameless” and said Washington was making a mockery of the UN through its behaviour. In a statement from its mission to the UN in New York, North Korea condemned reported US plans to hold a briefing on alleged North Korean violations of UN sanctions. It said the real issue the UN should focus on is what it described as a “hideous criminal act” by the United States, without giving details. Pyongyang said the US “despises the existence of the UN itself” and uses the organisation only when it serves its strategic goals. It warned that Washington’s “irrationality and malpractice” in using the UN arena for unilateral and selfish purposes should not be […]

Iran not seeking war but fully prepared, says minister

Iran’s foreign minister says the country does not want war but is fully prepared to fight if necessary. He also says Tehran is open to talks with the United States if negotiations are fair and based on mutual respect. Abbas Araghchi told a gathering of foreign ambassadors in Tehran that Iran is ready for both conflict and diplomacy. He stressed that any talks must give Iran equal rights and must not be dictated by Washington. Araghchi’s comments come as US President Donald Trump signals that Iran’s leadership is seeking negotiations after he warned of possible military action over the crackdown on protests. Washington has also maintained a “maximum pressure” policy aimed at curbing Iran’s nuclear programme. The minister repeated that Iran’s nuclear activities are peaceful, even as Western countries and the UN nuclear watchdog say Tehran once ran an organised […]

Iran warns it will strike back if US attacks

Iran has warned that it will hit Israel and US military bases if the United States launches strikes on its territory, as mass protests continue across the country. Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf told lawmakers that any US attack would be a serious mistake and said Iran would treat Israel, US bases and US ships as legitimate targets. Qalibaf is a former commander in the Revolutionary Guards, the elite force that plays a central role in Iran’s security. The warning comes as Iran faces its largest anti-government protests since 2022, driven first by soaring inflation and then by anger at the country’s clerical rule. Rights group HRANA says at least 116 people have been killed so far, including 37 members of the security forces. Authorities accuse the United States and Israel of fueling the unrest and have tightened their crackdown. […]
