Petrol price may rise again as crude oil hits new high

Nigerians may face another round of petrol price increases as crude oil prices continue to climb on the international market. Nigeria’s Bonny Light crude has risen to 70.30 dollars per barrel from 64 dollars last week, about a 10 per cent increase and the highest level so far this year. Brent crude now trades at 70.15 dollars per barrel, up from 66 dollars, while Murban crude has moved to 68.01 dollars from 65.20 dollars. Earlier in the week, filling stations raised petrol pump prices to an average of 850 naira per litre from 750 naira, citing the rise in crude prices. The Dangote Refinery and oil marketers argued that crude oil is the main input cost and that higher crude prices inevitably push up fuel prices. However, while crude prices went up by about 6.2 per cent, the local petrol […]

Nicki Minaj explains why she is Trump’s number one fan

Global rap star Nicki Minaj has declared herself Donald Trump’s number one fan, saying criticism of him only makes her support stronger. She spoke at the Trump Accounts Summit, where she also announced her backing for the Trump Accounts initiative, a programme designed to provide trust funds for children. Dressed in a furry white coat, Minaj said she was proud to stand by Trump regardless of public opinion. “I will say that I am probably the president’s number one fan, and that’s not going to change,” she said. She added that negative comments from critics do not affect her and instead motivate her to support him even more. Minaj praised what she described as the strong backing Trump enjoys, saying he has “a lot of force behind him” and insisting that God is protecting him. Trump, who earlier joked about […]

China tells US its containment strategy is bound to fail

China has warned that United States efforts to contain its rise are doomed to fail, even as Beijing says it is willing to work with Washington to improve relations. Defence ministry spokesman Jiang Bin told a news briefing on Thursday that “facts have proven that any attempt to contain or block China is doomed to fail.” He added that China is ready to work with the US to promote stable ties ahead of President Donald Trump’s expected visit to China in April for talks with President Xi Jinping. The warning comes days after the US Department of Defense released its 2026 National Defense Strategy, which pledges to “deter China in the Indo Pacific through strength, not confrontation.” The new strategy adopts a softer tone than the previous one under former President Joe Biden, which labelled China as Washington’s most consequential […]

Iraq PM hopeful Maliki slams Trump over ‘blatant’ interference

Iraqi prime ministerial candidate Nouri al Maliki has condemned what he called blatant interference by United States President Donald Trump in Iraq’s internal politics. Maliki spoke after Trump warned that Washington would end all support to Iraq if he emerged as prime minister. Maliki, a former two term prime minister, said in a post on X that Iraq firmly rejects American meddling in its affairs. He described Trump’s comments as a violation of Iraq’s democratic system, which has been in place since the 2003 US led invasion that removed Saddam Hussein. The 75 year old politician fell out with Washington during his earlier time in office between 2006 and 2014 over his close ties to Iran and accusations of pursuing a sectarian agenda. Despite this, he has remained a powerful figure and kingmaker whose backing is seen as crucial to […]

Iran protest death toll nears 6,000 as Tehran warns US

A U.S.-based rights group says nearly 6,000 people have been killed in Iran’s ongoing protest crackdown, as Tehran warns Washington against any form of intervention. The demonstrations, which began in late December over economic hardship, quickly evolved into mass protests against the Islamic republic, with huge rallies from January 8 and a nationwide internet shutdown now in its 18th day. The Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) said it has confirmed 5,848 deaths, including 209 security personnel, and is still investigating a further 17,091 possible fatalities. It also reported at least 41,283 arrests. By contrast, Iranian authorities last week gave an official toll of 3,117 dead, mostly described as security forces or bystanders killed by “rioters”. Rights monitors accuse security forces of firing directly at protesters under cover of the internet blackout. NetBlocks said the shutdown is “obscuring the extent […]

Ukraine says deadly Russian strikes threaten US‑backed peace talks

Ukraine has accused Russia of undermining efforts to end their nearly four‑year war by launching fresh deadly attacks while Ukrainian, Russian and U.S. officials hold direct peace talks in Abu Dhabi. Overnight bombardments killed one person and injured 27 in Kyiv and Kharkiv, even as negotiators met for a second day to discuss the latest U.S.‑brokered proposals. Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga said President Vladimir Putin ordered a “brutal massive missile strike” on Ukraine while the delegations were meeting, accusing Moscow of hitting “not only our people, but also the negotiation table”. Ukraine’s chief negotiator Rustem Umerov said discussions in Abu Dhabi were focused on parameters for ending the war and the future logic of the negotiation process. The talks come after U.S. President Donald Trump met Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky at the World Economic Forum in Davos and U.S. envoy […]

Zelenskiy: Territorial issue on table at UAE trilateral talks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy says the vital question of territory in Ukraine’s war with Russia will be discussed at U.S.‑brokered trilateral talks in Abu Dhabi on Friday and Saturday. Kyiv faces growing pressure from Washington to strike a peace deal in the nearly four‑year conflict, while Moscow is demanding that Ukraine give up the entire eastern Donbas region before halting its offensive. Speaking in a WhatsApp media chat a day after what he and U.S. President Donald Trump described as positive talks, Zelenskiy said the status of Donbas would be a central focus of the UAE meeting. “The issue of Donbas is key,” he said, adding that the talks would examine how all three sides view the territorial question. An aide to Zelenskiy said discussions would start on Friday evening. A major sticking point remains Russian President Vladimir Putin’s demand […]

Trump sends US ‘armada’ toward Gulf amid Iran tensions

President Donald Trump says a US “armada” is heading toward the Gulf as Washington keeps a close watch on Iran despite recently playing down the prospect of imminent military action. He told reporters on Air Force One, returning from the World Economic Forum in Davos, that the United States was sending a “massive fleet” toward Iran “just in case”, adding that he would rather avoid conflict but was monitoring Tehran “very closely”. Trump has repeatedly kept open the option of new strikes on Iran after backing Israel’s 12 day war in June aimed at degrading Iranian nuclear and ballistic missile capabilities. He said in Davos that US attacks on Iranian uranium enrichment sites last year were intended to prevent Tehran from developing a nuclear weapon, something Iran denies. The latest remarks come after weeks of seesaw rhetoric, with Trump at […]

Trump’s Greenland climbdown eases tension but future still unclear

U.S. President Donald Trump has backed away from using tariffs or military force to push his controversial plan to acquire Greenland from Denmark, easing fears of a major transatlantic rift. After weeks of threats, he dropped the tariff idea and hinted that a preliminary agreement over the Arctic territory could be reached instead. Trump’s bid to gain control of Greenland, a Danish territory and key NATO outpost, had alarmed European allies who saw it as a direct challenge to an alliance that has underpinned Western security since World War Two. Following talks at the World Economic Forum in Davos with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump voiced optimism about a deal that would secure a U.S. missile defence site and access to critical minerals while countering Russian and Chinese influence in the Arctic. European stock markets steadied on the news, […]

US presses Nigeria to do more to protect Christians

The United States has told Nigeria it must do more to protect Christians as senior officials from both countries meet in Abuja for high level security talks. The comments follow the reported mass kidnapping of worshippers from several churches in Kaduna State, an incident that has triggered local and international concern. Allison Hooker, US under secretary of state for political affairs and head of the American delegation, said Nigeria’s government must guarantee that Christians can practise their faith freely and safely. She directly referenced the alleged abduction of more than 170 people from churches in Kajuru Local Government Area. Hooker’s remarks reflect the priority US President Donald Trump has placed on what he calls “genocide” and “persecution” of Christians in Nigeria. Washington’s framing has been rejected by the Nigerian government and many analysts, who note that both Muslims and Christians […]
