Nigeria Gains Global Recognition for Tax-ID

Nigeria has achieved a significant milestone in its digital trade transformation with the global registration of its Tax Identification Number (Tax-ID) and the approval of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) as the country’s official Peppol Authority. The achievement, supported by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), registers Nigeria’s Tax-ID under the ISO/IEC 6523 International Coding System, granting Nigerian individuals and businesses recognition in cross-border transactions. Peppol—a globally accepted framework for the secure and standardised exchange of electronic documents—is widely used in Europe, Asia, and Australia. With FIRS as Nigeria’s Peppol Authority, local businesses can now connect seamlessly to this international network, ensuring faster payments, reduced administrative costs, and improved competitiveness. According to FIRS, the move will simplify compliance for taxpayers while boosting investor confidence. “This milestone simplifies compliance for taxpayers, enables smoother cross-border transactions, and strengthens confidence in Nigeria […]

Okonjo-Iweala: How Nigeria can lead AfCFTA

Nigeria can emerge as a leader under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) if it tackles logistics bottlenecks, invests in value addition, and builds efficient payment systems, according to World Trade Organisation (WTO) Director-General, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. Speaking at the WTO Public Forum in Geneva, Switzerland, Okonjo-Iweala urged Nigeria and other African nations to fast-track AfCFTA implementation, expand infrastructure, and cut trade costs to unlock billions of dollars in opportunities across manufacturing, services, and digital trade. “The AfCFTA is a great step, but Africa still trades only 15–20% within itself, compared to 60% in the European Union. We need to accelerate implementation so Africans trade more with each other,” she said. She cited examples such as Lesotho, which exports $200 million worth of textiles annually to the U.S.—about 10% of its GDP—while Africa imports $7 billion worth of similar […]

Nigeria Can’t Wait Any Longer for State Police – Deputy Speaker

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, says Nigeria can no longer afford to delay the creation of state police if it wants to effectively tackle rising insecurity. Speaking to journalists in Abuja after returning from Geneva, Switzerland—where he attended the 55th WTO-IPU Parliamentary Conference—Kalu described Nigeria’s centralized policing system as inadequate and outdated compared to global best practices. According to him, worsening cases of banditry, violent crimes, and communal clashes require a policing model that brings law enforcement closer to the people. “The only way we can achieve faster response times is by unbundling the current centralized structure,” Kalu explained. “If we establish state police alongside the federal police, we can address security challenges more effectively while tailoring policing to local realities.” Kalu acknowledged concerns that state police could be hijacked by politicians but insisted the greater […]
