Supreme Court judgment: Rivers ADC shifts focus to winning 2027 polls

The Rivers State chapter of the African Democratic Congress says it is now fully focused on winning the 2027 general elections after a Supreme Court judgment restored the party’s David Mark led national leadership. The ruling set aside an earlier Court of Appeal order that had asked all factions to maintain the status quo in the party’s leadership crisis. Rivers ADC chairman elect Dr Chukwudi Dimkpa described the Supreme Court decision as a welcome development and a major relief for members. He said the verdict provides a clear and lawful pathway for the party to organise itself and prepare for the next polls. The apex court held that the Court of Appeal acted outside its jurisdiction when it issued fresh directives after already dismissing the appeal before it. Justices of the Supreme Court called the status quo order unnecessary, unwarranted […]

2027 polls: Supreme Court to decide PDP, ADC fate today

The Supreme Court will today deliver key judgments that will decide the fate of the Peoples Democratic Party and the African Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections. The apex court is set to rule on four appeals linked to leadership crises tearing through the two opposition parties. In the case of the PDP, the appeals centre on the validity of the party’s national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 15 and 16, 2025. A faction led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is asking the court to uphold the convention and its decisions, while rival groups insist due process was not followed. Previous rulings from lower courts faulted the PDP for obtaining conflicting orders from courts of equal rank over its internal dispute. One Court of Appeal decision described the party’s actions as an abuse of […]

Supreme Court reserves judgment in David Mark’s appeal on ADC leadership tussle

The Supreme Court has reserved judgment in an appeal filed by a factional National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) over the party’s leadership dispute. A five member panel of the apex court headed by Justice Mohammed Garba announced on Wednesday that the date for the judgment would be communicated to lawyers representing all parties in the case. The decision followed the adoption of briefs by counsel, who each urged the court to grant the reliefs sought by their clients. The appeal, marked SC/CV/180/2026, was lodged by David Mark and challenges the March 12 judgment of the Court of Appeal. The appellate court had dismissed his appeal against a September 4, 2025 ruling by Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, Abuja, which refused to grant injunctive reliefs sought in an ex parte application filed by ADC chieftain […]

ADC crisis deepens as David Mark‑led NWC, state chairmen clash over party control

The leadership crisis rocking the African Democratic Congress has worsened as a bloc of state chairmen has openly clashed with the David Mark‑led National Working Committee over control of the party. The 25 chairmen, who say they constitute the core of the party’s National Executive Committee, announced in Abuja that they have collectively assumed interim leadership of the ADC. Their move follows the Independent National Electoral Commission’s decision to delist Mark and National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola from its records and to stop recognising any of the contending factions pending a court ruling. INEC’s action, based on a Court of Appeal judgment in the leadership dispute between Mark and Nafiu Bala Gombe, effectively left the party without an officially recognised national chairman. Led by Abia chairman Don Norman Obinna, the state chairmen rejected both the Mark coalition and the Gombe camp, […]

ADC NEC takes over party administration, appoints interim leadership

The National Executive Council of the African Democratic Congress has announced that it is taking over the administration of the party and putting in place an interim leadership structure. The move follows a prolonged leadership tussle and multiple court cases over who legally controls the ADC ahead of the 2027 elections. At an emergency NEC meeting in Abuja, key stakeholders resolved to sideline the warring factions and mandated a caretaker team to manage the party’s affairs until a national convention is held. Leaders aligned with former interim chairman David Mark and other elders said the step became necessary to stabilise the party and restore confidence among members and aspirants. The interim leadership has been tasked with organising a credible national convention, reconciling aggrieved blocs and ensuring strict adherence to the party’s constitution and the Electoral Act. NEC members also warned […]

IPAC urges INEC to be cautious on ADC crisis, voter plan

The Inter Party Advisory Council has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to act with caution in handling the leadership crisis in the African Democratic Congress and its proposed nationwide voter revalidation exercise. IPAC said recent steps taken by the commission risk deepening tension and raising doubts about its neutrality ahead of the 2027 elections. IPAC expressed concern over INEC’s decision to freeze recognition of the Senator David Mark led National Working Committee of the ADC while court cases on the party’s leadership are still pending. It noted that even where internal leadership is being contested, this does not mean there is a vacuum, and warned that removing names of party leaders from INEC’s portal at this stage appears premature. The council warned that such actions could set a troubling precedent and create avoidable instability in the party system if […]

Kwankwaso’s Defection To ADC: APC A Threat To Democracy – Mark

National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, David Mark, has described Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s defection to the ADC as a turning point for Nigeria’s democracy. He spoke in Abuja as the former Kano State governor was formally received into the party ahead of the 2027 general elections. Mark said Kwankwaso’s move was more than a simple change of platform. He framed it as a deliberate response to Nigerians’ calls for a cohesive opposition capable of safeguarding democratic values and providing a credible alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress. The former Senate President accused the APC of posing the greatest threat to multiparty democracy in Nigeria. He warned that attempts to weaken opposition parties, shrink political space and concentrate power in one party were dangerous for the country’s future. According to Mark, the ADC is positioning itself as a rallying […]

Mark mourns founding editor of Newswatch magazine, Yakubu Mohammed

Former Senate President David Mark has joined other prominent Nigerians in mourning veteran journalist and Newswatch magazine co founder, Yakubu Mohammed, who died at 75. Mohammed, a pioneering editor and media administrator, passed away in Lagos after a brief illness, just months after fellow Newswatch co founder Dan Agbese died in November 2025. In his condolence message, Mark described Mohammed as one of the pillars of modern Nigerian journalism whose work at Newswatch redefined investigative reporting during the military era. He said the late editor used his pen to promote accountability, good governance and national unity over several decades. Mark recalled Mohammed’s role in establishing Newswatch in 1984 alongside Dele Giwa, Ray Ekpu and Dan Agbese, calling the magazine a turning point in Nigeria’s media history. He noted that Newswatch became a model for bold, fact driven journalism and a […]

ADC Crisis: Nafiu Bala Declares Self Authentic Chairman

The leadership tussle within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has deepened as Deputy National Chairman, Nafiu Bala, formally assumed office as the party’s National Chairman, rejecting the authority of former Senate President David Mark. Bala argued that both the Electoral Act and the ADC constitution empower him to succeed the former chairman, Ralph Nwosu, who resigned earlier this year after the party joined an opposition coalition. The coalition later announced Mark as Interim National Chairman. In an interview with The Guardian, Bala accused coalition leaders of attempting to hijack the ADC. “Our former National Chairman voluntarily resigned, and our constitution clearly outlines the transfer of power. I now resume office as the authentic National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress,” Bala said. He added that party leaders and members continued to rally around him. “Those who resigned have stepped aside […]

Mark Urges Nigerians to Give ADC a Chance in Upcoming Bye-Elections

National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Senator David Mark, has appealed to Nigerians to give the party a chance to prove itself in Saturday’s bye-elections. Speaking at an event for ADC candidates in Abuja, Mark said the party was ready to deliver better governance and urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure the polls are free, fair, and credible. “The ADC was created out of a genuine desire to give Nigerians an alternative. Give us the opportunity to show our worth,” he said. Mark called on voters in Anambra, Edo, Oyo, Taraba, Adamawa, Kaduna, Zamfara, Kano, Niger, and Ogun to support ADC candidates, promising that the party would keep its campaign promises. He also urged INEC to work transparently, noting that a credible election could help restore public trust in the electoral process. “All eyes are […]
