French Court Allows Major Muslim Gathering

A large Muslim gathering in northern Paris will go ahead as planned after a French court overturned a government decision to ban the event on security grounds. The four-day “Annual Encounter of Muslims of France,” organized by the Muslims of France (MF), had been blocked by local authorities who warned it could become a target for terrorist attacks. However, the organizers filed an urgent legal challenge, arguing that the ban violated fundamental freedoms, particularly the right to assemble. The administrative court ruled in their favor just two hours before the scheduled opening, allowing the event to proceed. In its decision, the court stated that the police had not provided sufficient evidence to justify the restrictions. It found no clear proof of risks such as counter-demonstrations or threats from far-right groups. Judges also dismissed concerns about pressure on security forces, noting […]

ISWAP attacks: Court exonerates DSS over terror suspect’s whereabouts

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has exonerated the Department of State Services (DSS) over allegations that it secretly detained and killed alleged ISWAP leader in Kogi, Yusuf Lukman Omeiza, who was linked to a series of terror attacks. The suit was filed by Omeiza’s relatives, Jimoh Yusuf and Fati Mohammed, who sought declarations that his alleged arrest, detention and killing without trial violated his right to life and demanded 10 billion naira in damages from the DSS and the Attorney General of the Federation. Lawyers to the plaintiffs relied largely on claims that the suspect had disappeared after his 2015 arrest in Okene, insisting that security agents must be held responsible. However, the DSS, through its counsel, argued that the allegation of extra‑judicial killing was based on hearsay and tendered documents to show that Omeiza was transferred to […]

Confusion Over Court Ruling on Police Tinted Glass Permit

Confusion surrounds a recent Federal High Court ruling on the Nigerian Police's tinted glass permit policy. While a human rights lawyer announced the court had ordered the police to "maintain status quo," the police have countered this claim. The dispute began when lawyer Inibehe Effiong shared parts of a court order from Warri, which he said restrained the police from enforcing the new permit requirement. However, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, stated the police had not been officially served and highlighted a different part of the same order. That section, Point 8, shows the court refused the applicant's three main requests for an interim injunction to stop the policy's enforcement entirely. This has led to conflicting public interpretations of the legal situation. While the police clarify their position, the ruling has been welcomed by many who see […]
