Gen Musa: How coup attempt was foiled at planning stage

Defence Minister General Christopher Musa has revealed how Nigerian security agencies foiled a planned coup at the “planning stage”, describing the plotters as a disgruntled group led by a colonel who failed promotion to brigadier general. Speaking on Channels Television, Musa said the officer, angered by his failure to meet promotion requirements, began mobilising other aggrieved elements within the Armed Forces, but joint monitoring by the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Department of State Services (DSS) and other security outfits exposed the plot early. Brains behind alleged coup knew the consequences – Defence Minister

Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd), says the military officers detained over the recent alleged coup plot were fully aware of the gravity of their actions before moving against the government. Speaking in an interview with Turkish public broadcaster TRT, Musa said the suspects “must have made up their minds when they decided to do this and must have considered their families,” insisting they are prepared to “face the wrath” if found guilty. It said those found culpable would be arraigned before appropriate military judicial panels in line with the Armed Forces Act and service regulations. Musa assured that the […]

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, has faulted the Nigerian military for failing to apologise to citizens after initially denying any coup plot, only to later confirm that some officers would face trial over an alleged scheme to overthrow the government. He said people in authority must learn to take Nigerians seriously and correct themselves publicly when previous statements turn out to be misleading. Falana recalled that in October 2025 the military dismissed claims linking the cancellation of the Independence Day parade to a coup plot as “false and malicious” and capable of creating unnecessary tension. He argued that once investigations showed the matter went beyond mere indiscipline, the military ought to have admitted this and apologised instead of quietly reversing its position. The lawyer also questioned the plan to try the detained officers by court martial, insisting that allegations […]
