2027: Court Dismisses Suit Querying Jonathan’s Eligibility

A Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a suit questioning former President Goodluck Jonathan’s eligibility to contest the 2027 presidential election. The suit, filed by Abuja-based lawyer Johnmary Jideobi in 2025, sought a declaration that Jonathan was constitutionally barred from running again, having already completed the tenure of the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and then served a full term after the 2011 election. The plaintiff relied on Sections 1(1)–(3) and 137(3) of the 1999 Constitution, arguing that Jonathan had effectively been sworn in as president twice. INEC Recognises Abdulrahman Mohammed As PDP National Chairman

The Independent National Electoral Commission has recognised Abdulrahman Mohammed as the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party. The recognition follows recent court decisions and the outcome of the party’s latest convention in Abuja. INEC’s position aligns with a Federal High Court judgment which voided the party’s November 16, 2025 convention in Ibadan and affirmed the Abdulrahman led structure. The commission subsequently updated its records to reflect Mohammed and his team as the authorised PDP leadership. At the recent PDP convention, delegates endorsed Abdulrahman Mohammed and a 22 member National Working Committee through a consensus arrangement.
