Total Faces War Crimes Claims Over Mozambique Massacre

French energy company TotalEnergies is facing accusations of complicity in war crimes related to a 2021 massacre near its gas project in northern Mozambique. A human rights group has filed a complaint in France, alleging Total enabled or supported actions by local security forces who tortured and killed dozens of civilians at its facility. The events happened in Cabo Delgado, a region troubled by violent Islamist militants. In March 2021, after insurgents attacked the town of Palma near Total’s gas plant, Mozambican soldiers reportedly detained and executed civilians in shipping containers at the site. Some victims were accused of helping the militants, but the actual number killed remains unclear. One investigative journalist estimates at least 97 deaths, possibly more. Total has denied any involvement, saying it cannot be held responsible for actions of troops guarding its gas works. The company’s […]

UN Women Seeks Urgent Action as Food Crisis Ravages Women and Girls in Sudan

UN Women Regional Director Anna Mutavati has called for urgent global action to protect women and girls suffering acute food insecurity as Sudan’s raging two-year conflict deepens the humanitarian crisis. In Geneva, Mutavati highlighted the findings of a new gender alert reporting that almost 11 million Sudanese women and girls now face severe hunger, with being female a primary predictor of malnutrition. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) declared famine in El Fasher and Kadugli in November 2025, with the crisis spreading rapidly through Darfur and Kordofan. The report documents that 73.7% of women cannot meet minimum dietary diversity, leading to widespread malnutrition. As violence engulfs regions, women and girls endure hunger, displacement, death, and escalating gender-based violence—including skipping meals for children and youngest girls receiving the smallest portions. Despite dire conditions, women-led organizations remain pivotal in humanitarian response. […]

CAN Accuses Presidency of Distorting Its Stance on Christian Killings

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has publicly accused the Presidency of misrepresenting its position on the killings of Christians in the country, leading to a dispute after a meeting meant to foster dialogue. CAN stated that it did not, at any point, dismiss the violence as a "so-called Christian genocide," contrary to a press release from the President's media aide, Daniel Bwala. The association insists that the persistent, organized attacks on Christian communities in Northern Nigeria and the Middle Belt amount to a "Christian genocide." CAN expressed deep disappointment, stating that the Presidency's report was "completely false and grossly unfair." They clarified that their position remains unchanged and that the government's portrayal trivializes the pain of the victims. The Christian body is now calling on the Federal Government and security agencies to act with urgency and transparency to halt […]

Israel Strikes Gaza, Accusing Hamas of Ceasefire Violation

Israel has launched air strikes in southern Gaza, accusing Hamas of violating a ceasefire agreement. The Israeli military stated that "terrorists" fired an anti-tank missile and gunfire at its troops in the Rafah area. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) called this a "blatant violation of the ceasefire" and promised a firm response. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu instructed officials to "act forcefully against terrorist targets." However, Hamas's military wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, denied any knowledge of clashes in the area. They stated that communication with their fighters there has been cut off since the war resumed earlier this year. A local source reported that the incident began when Hamas fighters clashed with a rival armed group in an area controlled by Israeli forces. This led to an exchange of fire and subsequent Israeli airstrikes. The ceasefire, which is part of a […]

UNICEF, Borno to Train 1,033 Conflict-Affected Children

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), in partnership with the Borno State Government, has launched a vocational training program for 1,033 children affected by the armed conflict in the Northeast. The initiative, launched in Maiduguri, aims to equip the children, including 466 girls, with practical skills to rebuild their lives. They will receive training in tailoring, ICT, car mechanics, shoemaking, and carpentry at centers across the state. A UNICEF representative stated that the prolonged insurgency has denied many children the chance to learn skills or pursue their dreams. The program is designed to restore "hope, dignity, and opportunity" by combining vocational training with life skills and psychosocial support. The Borno State Commissioner for Education commended UNICEF for the initiative, highlighting its importance for children who were previously abducted and forced into roles by insurgents.
