At least 12 people, among them children, have been killed after Israel launched a new incursion into Syrian territory in the Damascus countryside. Syrian state media reported that several Israeli soldiers were also wounded in the clashes.
The Israeli raid, carried out at dawn, struck the town of Beit Jinn and sent dozens of families fleeing to safer areas. According to the Syrian Arab News Agency, the bodies of at least five Syrians—including two children—were taken to the Golan National Hospital in al-Salam, Quneitra.
Israeli drones continued to hover over the area throughout the day, worsening the fear and preventing movement. The Syrian Civil Defence said its teams were unable to enter Beit Jinn to rescue the wounded because the Israeli military was still targeting anything that moved.
Israel’s incursions into southern Syria have grown more frequent and more violent since the fall of President Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, expanding Israel’s occupation zone and increasing tension across the region.
Local sources told Al Jazeera that more Syrians were killed or wounded in additional artillery and missile strikes on Beit Jinn. Clashes later broke out between residents and the Israeli force that pushed into the town.
The Israeli military said on X that six soldiers were wounded in the fighting, three of them seriously. It claimed the operation was “completed”, saying all suspects were either arrested or “eliminated”. Israeli forces, however, will remain deployed in the area and “continue to operate against any threat”, the statement added.
