NUPENG Protests Dangote’s Alleged Anti-Union Practices

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has accused Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, of pursuing an “anti-union agenda” in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector. In a joint statement released Friday in Abuja, NUPENG’s National President, Williams Akporeha, and Secretary General, Afolabi Olawale, alleged that Dangote and his cousin, Sayyu Dantata, were working to establish a monopoly that would undermine workers’ rights, unions, and economic justice. “NUPENG is seriously concerned and disturbed with the unconscionable business practices of Alhaji Sayyu Aliu Dantata and Alhaji Aliko Dangote who are scared of allowing unions to exist in their business outfits,” the statement read. The union expressed particular alarm over Dangote’s plan to import 10,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) trucks for fuel distribution. According to NUPENG, new drivers recruited under this scheme are being compelled to sign agreements barring them […]

Dangote Refinery to Roll Out 4,000 CNG Trucks for Nationwide Fuel Supply

The Dangote Refinery is preparing to begin nationwide fuel distribution using 4,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered trucks, the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) has confirmed. Speaking with reporters on Saturday, IPMAN’s National President, Abubakar Maigandi, said the refinery is currently numbering the trucks and may commence distribution within a week. “The management told me they are numbering the trucks now. Once that is completed, distribution will begin. Nigerians should not panic about the short delay,” Maigandi said. He explained that the refinery’s direct-to-market supply plan would cut out middlemen, lower transportation costs, and eventually reduce fuel prices for consumers. The refinery had earlier scheduled August 15, 2025, as the take-off date for direct supply of petroleum products to end-users, telecom companies, and other bulk customers, but the rollout was delayed. Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals has already invested […]

Starting August 2025, Dangote Oil Refinery, Africa’s largest with 650,000 bpd capacity, will begin direct distribution of gasoline and diesel to retail stations, manufacturers, telecom firms, and other major consumers—ending reliance on traditional middlemen and import-based suppliers. 1. Logistics Overhaul Dangote has ordered 4,000 CNG-powered tanker trucks—more than doubling Nigeria’s current fuel logistics fleet. Plans include building over 100 CNG refueling stations nationwide to support the new fleet. 2. Credit Facility Boost Dangote will provide a short-term credit facility for bulk buyers: purchase 500,000 L and access another 500,000 L on credit for two weeks, backed by a bank guarantee—designed to ease cash-flow burdens and streamline bulk procurement. 3. Disruption vs. Opportunity Local fuel traders—represented by the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN, with ~6,700 members)—warn the move could undermine their livelihoods: “In one fell swoop, he's trying to wipe […]
