Eight children missing after orphanage attack in Kogi

Eight children remain missing after an armed attack on an orphanage in Kogi State, in north-central Nigeria, authorities have confirmed. According to the state’s information commissioner, Kingsley Fanwo, gunmen stormed the unregistered facility on Sunday and abducted 23 children along with the orphanage’s owner. Security forces were able to rescue 15 of the children following what officials described as a rapid and coordinated response. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. However, security sources indicate the presence of a cell linked to Boko Haram in the area, which has experienced repeated incidents of violence. The commissioner noted that the orphanage was operating without official authorization and was located in a remote area, outside the oversight of relevant authorities. He called on operators of similar institutions to ensure proper registration and coordination with government agencies, particularly given the current security […]

Amnesty International Slams FG Over School Attacks in Nigeria

Amnesty International has condemned the Nigerian authorities for failing to protect schoolchildren amid a wave of abductions in the North, including the recent kidnapping of 315 students and staff from St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools in Niger State. Country Director Isa Sanusi stated that the attacks underscore persistent security gaps and repeated government failures to learn from past incidents. Sanusi noted that over 230 Northern children are currently in captivity, while hundreds of schools in states like Katsina and Plateau remain closed due to attacks. He warned that many children, especially girls, have been forced out of school or married off for safety. Amnesty International accused authorities of neglect and called for urgent investigations into the attacks—potentially as war crimes or crimes against humanity—and for perpetrators to be prosecuted in fair trials. The group insists the right to […]

Under Siege: 2,496 Students Abducted in 92 School Attacks Since Chibok

New data reveals 2,496 students abducted in 92 school attacks across Nigeria since the Chibok tragedy in 2014. Recent mass kidnappings in Niger and Kebbi states have reignited concerns about student safety, with abductions now a source of ransom income for criminal groups and a cause for widespread fear and trauma. Analysis shows nearly 70 attacks on schools from 2014–2022, with over 1,680 students taken by the end of that period. An additional 22 attacks and 816 students kidnapped occurred from January 2023 to November 2025. Most incidents are concentrated in the North, especially in states like Kaduna, Zamfara, Niger, and Kebbi. Experts warn many cases go unreported, so actual abduction numbers could be higher. The Chibok abduction marked a turning point—many girls are still missing, and mass abductions have since escalated with recurring ransom demands. More than one million […]

Martins highlighted attacks on school staff—Vice Principal Hassan Yakubu Makuku and the Chief Security Officer at Eruku, Kwara—and criticized policy gaps that allowed terrorists to kill security personnel and abduct dozens of schoolgirls. He called for urgent identification and prosecution of terrorists and their sponsors, stressing that every citizen is at risk given the brazen level of violence. Martins expressed hope for the safe return of schoolchildren, called for collective prayer and action, and demanded […]

Pfizer, Tris Pharma Pay $41.5m in Texas ADHD Drug Settlement

Pfizer and Tris Pharma reached a $41.5 million settlement with Texas after being accused of falsifying quality control tests for Quillivant XR, an ADHD medication, and defrauding the state’s Medicaid program. The suit claimed that between 2012 and 2018, tests showed Quillivant XR sometimes failed to dissolve in the body properly, resulting in ineffective treatment for children. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said the companies provided adulterated drugs and changed test results to secure Medicaid reimbursements. Both Pfizer and Tris Pharma deny any wrongdoing, stating there was no impact on patient safety and still stand by Quillivant’s quality. Whistleblower Tarik Ahmed, Tris Pharma’s technology chief, made the initial complaint that led to the lawsuit. Pfizer stopped marketing Quillivant XR in 2018 after Tris Pharma purchased the product.
