Man City face Anfield test as Arsenal close in on title

Arsenal can take another big step towards the Premier League title when they host Sunderland on Saturday before Manchester City travel to Liverpool for a daunting clash at Anfield. The Gunners already hold a six point lead at the top as they chase a first league crown since the 2003/04 Invincibles season. Aston Villa remain third but a recent dip in form has allowed Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool to close in on the Champions League places. City’s latest setback came last weekend when they squandered a two goal lead in another second half collapse at Tottenham. With Arsenal expected to beat Sunderland at home and potentially move nine points clear, Pep Guardiola’s side have little room left for error. Anfield has long been a difficult venue for City. Their only away league win over Liverpool since 2003 came behind […]

Age, eligibility rules blocked my Man United move — Mikel

Former Super Eagles and Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has revealed that strict age and eligibility regulations prevented him from joining Manchester United, despite the Premier League giants’ strong interest when he was a teenager. In an interview with Sky Sports, Mikel said he was just 16 when he spent about a month training at Old Trafford, regularly working with the United first team under Sir Alex Ferguson. The legendary manager, he recalled, was keen to keep him at the club. However, Premier League work‑permit and eligibility rules for non‑European players blocked the move. At the time, foreign players from outside Europe were required to have played in at least 75 per cent of their national team’s recent senior matches to qualify. Mikel had not yet featured for Nigeria’s senior side, so he did not meet the criteria. He added […]

Liverpool beat Chelsea to £60m Rennes defender Jacquet

Liverpool have beaten Chelsea to the signing of Rennes centre back Jeremy Jacquet in a deal worth up to £60 million, according to British media reports. The 20 year old French Under 21 international will remain at Rennes until the end of the season despite Liverpool’s urgent need for defensive reinforcements. Jacquet had been strongly linked with a move to Chelsea earlier in January but was reportedly discouraged by the fierce competition for places in the London club’s already crowded pool of central defenders. Liverpool, by contrast, are short of options at the back. Captain Virgil van Dijk, 34, and Ibrahima Konate, who is out of contract in the summer, are currently the only fit senior centre backs available to manager Arne Slot, with Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni sidelined by injury. Since breaking into Rennes’ first team last season, […]

Why I asked my mother before signing Greenwood – Longoria

Marseille president Pablo Longoria has revealed that he consulted his mother before approving the controversial signing of former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood in 2024, calling it one of the toughest decisions of his career. He said he wanted an opinion completely detached from football, money and club interests before giving the green light. Longoria explained that the club viewed Greenwood’s arrival as a huge sporting opportunity but carried out extensive due diligence on the case first. Greenwood was suspended by Manchester United in January 2022 following his arrest on suspicion of attempted rape, assault and coercive behaviour, with all charges later dropped in February 2023 after key witnesses withdrew. Speaking to The Telegraph, Longoria said he called his mother, Begona Longoria, a former prison system worker in Spain who once received a state medal for her service.
