Global divisions deepen as more nations back Palestinian State

Momentum is growing for international recognition of a Palestinian State, even as the United States and Israel strongly oppose the move. On Monday, Britain formally recognised Palestine, following similar steps by Canada and Australia. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the recognition “keeps alive the possibility of peace,” while reaffirming support for efforts to free Israeli hostages. As of September 2025, 150 of the 193 UN member states — over 78% — now recognise Palestine as a sovereign state. The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) had already granted Palestine non-member observer status in 2012. However, U.S. President Donald Trump dismissed the endorsements, calling them a “reward for terrorism.” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was even more forceful, declaring: “There will be no Palestinian State west of the Jordan River.” Netanyahu argued that recognising Palestine undermines peace, while pledging to expand […]

Nigerian women demand reserved seats in parliament

Hundreds of women marched through Abuja on Monday to demand the passage of a bill that would reserve seats for women in Nigeria’s parliament. The proposed legislation, known as the Special Seats Bill, seeks to create one women-only seat in the Senate and House of Representatives for each of Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. If passed, the measure would require a constitutional amendment. Nigeria currently has one of the lowest levels of female representation in Africa, with only four women in the 109-seat Senate and 16 women in the 360-member House of Representatives, according to the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC). Many African countries, including Rwanda and Senegal, have successfully used quota systems to boost women’s participation in politics. “We want the legislature to work for women,” said activist Dorothy Njemanze, one of the organisers, who […]

Saudi Arabia frees 3 Nigerian pilgrims held for drug trafficking

Saudi authorities have released three Nigerian pilgrims who were wrongfully detained in Jeddah last month on allegations of drug trafficking. The Director of Media and Advocacy of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Femi Babafemi, confirmed their release on Wednesday at a press briefing in Abuja. The freed pilgrims are Maryam Hussain Abdullahi, Abdullahi Bahijja Aminu, and Abdulhamid Saddieq. They had been held for four weeks after drugs were found in luggage fraudulently tagged with their names at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport before boarding an Ethiopian Airlines flight ET940 to Jeddah on August 6, 2025. Babafemi said their freedom followed “weeks of sustained engagements” by NDLEA Chairman, Brig Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), with Saudi Arabia’s General Directorate of Narcotics Control (GDNC), backed by President Bola Tinubu and senior Nigerian officials including Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), Foreign […]

Former Minister of Education and ex-Nigerian Ambassador to the United States, Professor Tunde Adeniran, has prayed for the success of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, stressing that restructuring and true federalism are essential for Nigeria’s progress. Speaking in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Tuesday, the professor of political science told The Guardian that Nigeria could achieve restructuring before the 2027 general elections if the political will exists. “We need restructuring now so that we can have federalism. It can be done before the 2027 election,” he said. Adeniran added that his prayer for Tinubu was for him to succeed in office so that Nigeria could “be okay” and citizens could experience meaningful improvements in governance. The former minister’s comments come amid renewed debates on devolution of powers, fiscal federalism, and regional autonomy, with political analysts and civil society groups insisting that restructuring […]

Chairman of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has outlined a bold vision to establish world-class Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) hangars across Nigeria’s international airports, a move expected to reposition the country as the leading aviation hub in West and Central Africa. The multi-billion-naira initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises infrastructure and economic diversification. DSS Demands X Suspend Sowore’s Account Over Tinubu Post

The Department of State Services (DSS) has written to X (formerly Twitter), demanding the urgent suspension of the verified account of activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore over a post on President Bola Tinubu. The agency alleged that Sowore’s August 25 post, in which he described Tinubu as a “criminal” while reacting to the president’s anti-corruption remarks in Brazil, was capable of inciting violence and undermining national security. In a letter dated September 6, signed by B. Bamigboye on behalf of the DSS Director-General, the agency said the “tweet” ridiculed the president before the international community and had already sparked protests by Tinubu’s supporters. “The said tweet is still in circulation and has attracted widespread condemnation by majority of Nigerians, some of whom may resort to unwholesome activities… thereby creating political tension and threatening the country’s national security,” the letter reads.
