Turji Alleges Two Ex Governors Are Fuelling Insecurity

Notorious bandit leader Bello Turji has claimed in a viral video that two former governors from Zamfara and Sokoto states bear major responsibility for the insecurity ravaging parts of northern Nigeria. He accused the past administrations of laying the groundwork for today’s violence through decisions he said worsened tensions and communal distrust. Turji alleged that the former leaders armed local vigilante groups, popularly called Yan Banga, in ways that he claims targeted Fulani communities and escalated reprisals. According to him, those policies turned what should have been community protection initiatives into forces that deepened ethnic and social divisions. In the same video, Turji addressed controversy over his past contacts with the Zamfara State government when Bello Matawalle, now Minister of State for Defence, was governor. He admitted taking part in peace talks with the then administration but denied receiving a […]

US Nigeria Near Security Deal After Christian Genocide Row

The Federal Government and a visiting United States congressional delegation led by Congressman Riley Moore are close to finalising a new strategic framework to address insecurity across Nigeria. The talks follow months of tension over claims by some US lawmakers and lobby groups that Christians in Nigeria are facing genocide, an allegation Abuja strongly rejects. Moore, who has been one of the most vocal critics of Nigeria’s handling of attacks on Christian communities, said the latest meetings in Abuja with National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and other officials were “productive and positive”. He disclosed that both sides discussed concrete actions which, if fully carried out, could significantly enhance security nationwide. According to Moore, the emerging framework focuses on strengthening intelligence sharing, improving early warning systems, supporting communities vulnerable to terrorism and farmer herder violence, and tightening accountability for security abuses. A combined team of security operatives has neutralised a notorious bandit kingpin, Kachalla Naallah, in Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State. Security sources said he had been on the radar of intelligence agencies for months due to his role in coordinating assaults on rural communities and highways. The latest success comes days after troops of the Nigerian Army’s 8 Division killed another notorious commander, Kachalla Kallamu, a close ally of wanted bandit leader Bello Turji, in Sabon Birni Local Government Area. Lai Mohammed Urges Nigerians To Back Tinubu On Insecurity

Former Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has called on Nigerians to give stronger support to President Bola Tinubu’s administration in its efforts to tackle insecurity. He said the scale and complexity of today’s security threats make it impossible for government and security agencies to succeed without active citizen cooperation. Speaking in an interview, Mohammed noted that the Tinubu government has introduced several measures to curb terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes. However, he argued that these steps will only produce lasting results if communities share information, resist propaganda and stop shielding criminals. He criticised what he described as a growing tendency to politicise security issues and to downplay government successes while amplifying failures. According to him, such attitudes embolden violent groups and weaken the morale of security personnel risking their lives on the frontlines. Mohammed urged […]

DSS Frees Three Men Wrongly Held Over Banditry Allegations

The Department of State Services has released three men earlier arrested on suspicion of involvement in banditry and kidnapping after a fresh review showed they were wrongly detained. The men were picked up in June 2025 as part of wider security operations targeting banditry networks in the country. A special review panel set up by the DSS examined their case and concluded that investigations did not establish any link between the suspects and the alleged crimes. Following this finding, the Director General of the DSS, Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, ordered their immediate release. The three men, identified as Umar Ibrahim, Alhaji Bello Rabiu and Jaja Sarki Bamo, were also granted financial compensation approved by the DSS leadership. The payment is intended to acknowledge the error in their arrest and to support their reintegration after months in custody. Security sources indicated that […]

Report: Why ex defence minister Badaru really resigned

Fresh details have emerged suggesting that former Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, was pressured to resign not only over health concerns but also because of a long running rift with Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, and mounting criticism of his handling of insecurity. Badaru, who was appointed defence minister in August 2023 after serving two terms as Jigawa State governor, formally resigned on Monday after about two years in office, with the Presidency announcing that he stepped down due to “poor health”, while President Bola Tinubu immediately swore in former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa (retd.), as his replacement. However, multiple senior defence ministry and military sources told Saturday Punch that a “frosty relationship” between Badaru and Matawalle had quietly destabilised parts of the ministry’s work for months, even though both men maintained a cordial […]

Ribadu warns terror sponsors of decisive action

National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu has warned that any individuals or groups attempting to spread terror or destabilise Nigeria will face swift and decisive action from the security forces. Ribadu gave the warning while addressing stakeholders at a security forum in Abuja, where he emphasised that the government would not tolerate efforts to incite violence, promote extremism or undermine national stability. He said the security architecture was being strengthened to track and dismantle networks behind terrorism, banditry and communal violence, including those who fund, shelter or provide logistical support to armed groups. The NSA urged community, religious and political leaders to resist being used to spread hate or division, calling instead for cooperation with security agencies through timely sharing of information and support for law enforcement operations. Ribadu also assured Nigerians that the government is committed to protecting lives and […]

Protest hits Madrid over kidnappings of Nigerian schoolchildren

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside the Nigerian embassy in Madrid on Saturday to protest the wave of school kidnappings in Nigeria and demand stronger international and domestic action. The rally was sparked by the abduction of more than 250 students from a Catholic school in northern Nigeria last week, which rights groups say is part of a years‑long pattern of mass student kidnappings. Christiana Wariboko, president of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, told the crowd they were speaking “on behalf of Christians” and urged foreign governments and institutions to intervene over what she described as continued killings of Nigerian Christians. The Madrid protest also highlighted a separate attack on a predominantly Muslim school in Kebbi State, where 30 students were seized before being freed by authorities, underscoring that kidnappers target schools of different faiths, often for ransom. The demonstrations […]

Abductions: Tinubu Orders 24-Hour Aerial Surveillance on Kwara, Kebbi, Niger Forest

President Bola Tinubu has directed a continuous 24-hour aerial security operation over forests in Kwara, Kebbi, and Niger States after a series of mass abductions and rising banditry. The Nigerian Air Force is to coordinate the aerial patrol with ground troops to deter kidnappers, track criminal movements, and enable faster rescue missions for victims. The move follows the recent abduction of more than 20 people—including women and children—in Isapa, Kwara. The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has threatened to pull teachers from unsafe classrooms, demanding urgent government action to secure schools and rescue those in captivity. The United Nations has also called for immediate steps to end the wave of mass kidnappings. Kwara’s governor set up a high-level committee to develop local security solutions, while Kebbi's governor welcomed the safe return of 25 abducted schoolgirls—affirming no ransom was paid, crediting […]
