Atletico Madrid suffer fresh injury scare ahead Arsenal UCL showdown

Atletico Madrid have suffered a new injury concern after midfielder Pablo Barrios limped off during their 3–2 La Liga win over Athletic Club just days before their Champions League semi final showdown with Arsenal. Barrios was restored to the starting lineup on Saturday as Diego Simeone rotated his squad following the recent defeat to Elche, with the coach clearly managing minutes ahead of the European tie. However, the youngster was unable to complete the game and had to be substituted shortly before the hour mark, making way for Johnny Cardoso. The club later confirmed that Barrios felt muscular discomfort in his left thigh, with further medical tests scheduled to determine the extent of the problem. Turkish Cup: Osimhen cleared for Gala comeback as Madrid join race for ace striker

Victor Osimhen is set to make his comeback tonight as Galatasaray host Gençlerbirliği in the Turkish Cup quarter final at Rams Park, in a return that coincides with reports that Real Madrid have joined Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in the battle for the Super Eagles striker. Osimhen only returned to full training last week after recovering from an arm injury sustained in the Champions League round of 16 clash against Liverpool, which sidelined him for four consecutive league matches. According to Turkish outlet Sabah, he is expected to feature for about 15 to 20 minutes against Gençlerbirliği as coach Okan Buruk carefully manages his workload ahead of Sunday’s high stakes Intercontinental Derby against Fenerbahçe. Champions League: Atletico sweat on Lookman ahead of Arsenal showdown

Atletico Madrid are facing an anxious wait over the fitness of Ademola Lookman ahead of their UEFA Champions League semi final first leg against Arsenal after the Super Eagles forward was ruled out of Wednesday’s La Liga clash with Elche. The club’s medical department confirmed that Lookman and strike partner Alexander Sorloth finished Saturday’s Copa del Rey final defeat to Real Sociedad with discomfort and have now been placed on individual training programmes away from the main squad. Atletico said tests carried out by their medical staff advised “maximum caution” to avoid aggravating the players’ conditions. “As a precaution, they will follow an individualised plan in the coming days, working outside the group,” the club statement noted, according to reports in Football Espana. The decision effectively rules both players out of the midweek league fixture, with Atletico prioritising their availability […]

Refereeing v Atletico ‘a robbery’ – Barca’s Raphinha

Barcelona forward Raphinha has branded the refereeing in their Champions League quarter-final defeat to Atletico Madrid “a robbery.” Barca exited 3–2 on aggregate despite a 2–1 win in Tuesday’s second leg, having lost the first leg 2–0 at home. In both matches a Barcelona defender was sent off after a yellow card was upgraded to red when the referee, on VAR advice, reviewed a potential denial of a goalscoring opportunity on the pitchside monitor. Pau Cubarsi was dismissed by Istvan Kovacs in the first leg, while fellow defender Eric Garcia was sent off by French referee Clement Turpin in the second. Kovacs and video assistant referee Christian Dingert were also criticised by Barcelona after they allowed play to continue when Atletico defender Marc Pubill handled the ball in his own penalty area from what appeared to be a goal-kick situation. UEFA reject Barca handball complaint before Atletico return

UEFA has rejected Barcelona’s complaint over a controversial handball incident in their Champions League quarter‑final first leg defeat to Atletico Madrid, just hours before the return leg. Atletico won the first game 2–0 at Camp Nou, but Barcelona were furious that no penalty was awarded when defender Marc Pubill appeared to handle the ball after receiving what looked like a goal kick inside the area. “After the first leg, Barcelona filed a protest relating to a referee decision. On 13 April 2026, the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body declared the protest to be inadmissible,” UEFA said in a statement. The Catalan club had described the decision not to give a spot kick as a “major error” that affected the outcome of the match and criticised the fact that Romanian referee Istvan Kovacs was not asked by VAR to review […]
