Retirement bombshell: Five DCGs to lead 1,516 officers out of Customs

The Nigeria Customs Service is set for a major shake-up as 1,516 officers are scheduled to leave the service over the next two years under statutory retirement. According to internal circulars issued by the service, five Deputy Comptroller-Generals will lead the exit, alongside dozens of senior officers across various commands and units nationwide. The retirement lists cover 825 officers due to leave in 2026 and another 691 in 2027. The notices, signed on behalf of the Deputy Comptroller-General in charge of Human Resources and Development, direct affected officers to begin preparations for their exit from active service. Navy intercepts 130 bags of smuggled rice in Badagry

The Nigerian Navy has intercepted 130 bags of smuggled foreign rice in the Badagry area of Lagos State during a recent anti smuggling operation. The seizure is part of ongoing efforts by naval authorities to clamp down on economic saboteurs operating along Nigeria’s western maritime corridor and border creeks. According to naval sources, personnel attached to the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Badagry carried out intelligence led patrols along the Badagry–Porto Novo axis before tracking down the smugglers. The operation, conducted in line with the Navy’s harmonised standard operating procedures, led to the confiscation of multiple bags of foreign parboiled rice that had been brought in through illegal routes. Customs begins compulsory drug tests for officers nationwide

The Nigeria Customs Service has introduced mandatory drug tests for all officers and men across its commands nationwide to strengthen security and integrity in its operations. Zonal Coordinator for Zone A, Assistant Comptroller General Mohammed Babandede, announced the move during a familiarisation visit to the Apapa Area Command in Lagos. He reminded officers that Customs’ core mandates include revenue generation, national security, public safety and trade facilitation. Babandede said drug screening will be conducted in every command and urged personnel to take their health seriously so they can deliver effective service. He stressed that strong enforcement is essential for creating a secure environment where legitimate trade can thrive.
