Nigeria’s National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, has rounded off a three day working visit to Washington DC, where he held high level talks with key United States officials on security, defence and regional stability. The visit, which ran from May 4 to 6, saw Ribadu meet US Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State and Acting National Security Adviser Marco Rubio, Under Secretary for Political Affairs Allison Hooker and Assistant Secretary of War Daniel Zimmerim. Nigerian officials involved in killing of Christians — US Senator Ted Cruz

United States senator Ted Cruz has alleged that some Nigerian government officials are complicit in attacks against Christians in the country. Cruz made the claim during a U.S. Senate Foreign Relations subcommittee hearing on Washington’s counterterrorism strategy in Africa, where he described Nigeria as the country with the highest number of Christians killed because of their faith. The comments follow the reported mass kidnapping of worshippers from several churches in Kaduna State, an incident that has triggered local and international concern. Allison Hooker, US under secretary of state for political affairs and head of the American delegation, said Nigeria’s government must guarantee that Christians can practise their faith freely and safely. She directly referenced the alleged abduction of more than 170 people from churches in Kajuru Local Government Area. Hooker’s remarks reflect the priority US President Donald Trump has placed on what he calls “genocide” and “persecution” of Christians in Nigeria. Washington’s framing has been rejected by the Nigerian government and many analysts, who note that both Muslims and Christians […]
