Super Eagles Reclaim Top 5 Spot in Africa in New FIFA Rankings

Nigeria's Super Eagles have climbed back into the top five of African football, according to the latest FIFA World Rankings. The team rose four places globally, moving from 45th to 41st in the world. This jump also pushed them to the 5th position in Africa. This positive move is a result of the team's back-to-back victories in recent international matches, which earned them 11.6 ranking points. The top four African teams remain unchanged: Morocco (12th globally), Senegal (18th), Egypt (32nd), and Algeria (35th). Other strong African sides include Côte d’Ivoire (42nd) and Tunisia (43rd). Cape Verde and Ghana Qualify for 2026 World Cup

Cape Verde and Ghana have both qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, turning disappointment into celebration after missing out on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Cape Verde, an island nation of around 550,000 people, achieved a historic milestone by becoming the smallest African country to qualify for the World Cup. Ghana, a four-time African champion, also secured its spot after a strong qualifying campaign. Their qualification brings joy to fans who had been frustrated by their earlier failures. The two nations now join Algeria, Egypt, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Senegal, South Africa, and Tunisia as the nine African teams automatically heading to the 2026 tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Four more teams — Cameroon, Gabon, DR Congo, and Nigeria — will compete in a mini-tournament in November for a chance to reach intercontinental play-offs in March. […]

The three-time African champions are at a crossroads. Having missed the 2022 finals in Qatar, Nigeria now risk consecutive failures — a prospect that would severely dent the country’s proud footballing legacy. So far, the qualifiers have been frustrating. Despite conceding only one goal in six matches, Nigeria have been held to four draws, undermining their chances of topping Group C. For a squad stacked with talent, the lack of victories has left fans restless and anxious. Rwanda, meanwhile, arrive as underdogs but cannot be underestimated. They have lost two of their last four qualifiers and struggle away from home, dropping 60% of recent matches on the road. Yet their pace and discipline […]
