Nigeria have a good chance of winning AFCON, says Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez

Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez says Nigeria now have a strong chance of winning the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after knocking his team out in the quarterfinals. He was speaking after the Super Eagles beat Algeria 2 0 in Marrakech to reach a record 16th AFCON semifinal. Mahrez praised Nigeria’s attack, led by Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams, who both scored in the quarterfinal clash. He said the team’s balance, confidence and goal scoring form make them one of the favourites to lift the trophy in Morocco. Before the game, Mahrez had admitted that Nigeria’s forwards were among the most dangerous at the tournament, even though he insisted he was not afraid of facing them. Salah fires Egypt past Ivory Coast into AFCON semis

Egypt booked their place in the Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals after a dramatic 3-2 victory over defending champions Ivory Coast in Agadir, with Mohamed Salah once again playing a decisive role. The Liverpool forward scored his fourth goal of the tournament as the Pharaohs continued their push for a first continental title since 2010. The win also sets up a high-profile semi-final against Senegal and Sadio Mané, renewing one of African football’s biggest rivalries. Egypt got off to a flying start when Omar Marmoush opened the scoring in the fourth minute, finishing calmly after being put through by Emam Ashour. Ivory Coast looked rattled, and their problems deepened on the half-hour mark when Rami Rabia rose highest to head in Salah’s corner and make it 2-0. The Elephants were handed a lifeline just before the break when Ahmed Abou […]

Osimhen outburst mars Nigeria’s AFCON win

Victor Osimhen’s emotional outburst overshadowed an otherwise emphatic night for Nigeria as the Super Eagles defeated Mozambique 4-0 to secure a place in the Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinals on Monday. The Round of 16 encounter, played at the Complexe Sportif de Fès, was largely one-sided, with Nigeria dominant from the opening exchanges. However, the spotlight shifted in the second half when Osimhen became involved in a heated exchange with teammate Ademola Lookman. The incident occurred in the 63rd minute with Nigeria already leading 3-0 and Osimhen on a hat-trick. Frustrated after not receiving a pass, the Galatasaray striker openly confronted Lookman and left-back Bruno Onyemaechi. The argument escalated quickly, prompting captain Wilfred Ndidi to step in, while Mozambique defender Reinildo Mandava and Nigeria’s Calvin Bassey also intervened to calm the situation. Moments later, Osimhen asked to be substituted and […]

Nigeria coach accepts underdog respect from Mozambique

He added that the team must now be fully focused because the knockout phase is a do or die situation, using the phrase “kill kill” to describe the intensity of the contest. Mozambique advanced to the last 16 of the 2025 Afcon after a demanding group campaign against top level opposition. Their progress included a historic 3 2 victory […]

Algeria booked their place in the Africa Cup of Nations last 16 as Group E winners with a narrow 1-0 victory over Burkina Faso at the Moulay Hassan Stadium in Rabat. The spot kick was awarded after Rayan Aït-Nouri was brought down in the area by Ismahila Ouedraogo, and Mahrez made no mistake to give the Fennecs a lead they would not relinquish. The result means Algeria have taken maximum points from their first two matches, ensuring top spot in the group with a game to spare. In the group’s other match, Sudan recovered from their opening defeat to Algeria by edging Equatorial Guinea 1-0. The breakthrough arrived in the 74th minute when defender Saúl Coco inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, […]

Amad goal earns Ivory Coast draw with Cameroon

Ivory Coast and Cameroon played out a hard-fought 1-1 draw in Marrakesh on Sunday, a result that keeps both sides firmly on track for qualification to the Africa Cup of Nations last 16. The reigning champions broke the deadlock seven minutes after the restart through Amad. Picking up the ball on the right wing, he drove inside onto his left foot and unleashed a fierce curling strike that beat Cameroon goalkeeper Devis Epassy. It was the winger’s second goal of the tournament, having already scored the winner against Mozambique in Ivory Coast’s opening match. Cameroon responded almost immediately. Just three minutes later, Junior Tchamadeu’s effort from inside the box took a deflection off Ghislain Konan and looped over goalkeeper Yahia Fofana, cancelling out Ivory Coast’s lead. The Indomitable Lions had shown promise earlier in the half, with Christian Kofane hitting […]

Gabon’s AFCON Hopes Hang on Mozambique Clash

Gabon’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign is already at a critical stage following their 1-0 loss to Cameroon in the opening match. With qualification hopes hanging in the balance, the Panthers face a must-win encounter against Mozambique in Agadir, a fixture that could determine whether they reach the knockout phase and extend Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s long and complicated AFCON journey. For Aubameyang, this tournament may represent one of the final chances to leave a lasting mark on Africa’s biggest football stage. Like many African greats before him who never lifted the trophy, the former African Footballer of the Year has endured a frustrating relationship with the competition. Comparisons with George Weah are often drawn, as both represented nations with limited continental pedigree, making AFCON glory an uphill task. Now competing in his sixth AFCON, Aubameyang’s history at the tournament has been […]

Chelle hints at tactical tweaks to Nigeria’s starting XI against Tunisia

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has suggested he may adjust Nigeria’s tactics and starting XI for Saturday night’s Africa Cup of Nations clash with Tunisia in Fez, Morocco. The Malian coach said he is weighing two different approaches for the high stakes Group C fixture at the Fez Stadium. Speaking at his pre match press conference on Friday, Chelle explained that he is considering a shift away from his usual possession based style. He said one option is to allow Tunisia more of the ball and then attack quickly in transition when Nigeria wins possession. Chelle added that his other option is to stick with the team’s current philosophy but make some tweaks to better handle Tunisia’s strengths. He declined to reveal his starting XI, saying fans would see his final selection when the game kicks off. Nigeria go […]

FIFA U 17 World Cup winner Christian Ebere Osinachi has backed the Super Eagles to win their fourth Africa Cup of Nations title at AFCON 2025 in Morocco.
