Algeria booked their place in the Africa Cup of Nations last 16 as Group E winners with a narrow 1-0 victory over Burkina Faso at the Moulay Hassan Stadium in Rabat.
The decisive moment came in the 23rd minute when captain Riyad Mahrez calmly converted a penalty. The spot kick was awarded after Rayan Aït-Nouri was brought down in the area by Ismahila Ouedraogo, and Mahrez made no mistake to give the Fennecs a lead they would not relinquish.
The result means Algeria have taken maximum points from their first two matches, ensuring top spot in the group with a game to spare.
In the group’s other match, Sudan recovered from their opening defeat to Algeria by edging Equatorial Guinea 1-0. The breakthrough arrived in the 74th minute when defender Saúl Coco inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, handing Sudan a vital win.
Algeria will now face the runner-up from Group D in the last 16, with Senegal, the Democratic Republic of Congo or Benin all possible opponents. That knockout tie is scheduled for January 6 in Rabat, and the winner could go on to meet Nigeria in the quarterfinals in Marrakesh on January 10.
The 2019 champions will round off their Group E campaign against Equatorial Guinea on New Year’s Eve, while Sudan take on Burkina Faso in the final set of group fixtures.

Arsenal reach UCL final with unbeaten run
It may seem unusual to say a team heading to a Champions League final has gone somewhat under the radar, but that has largely been the case for Arsenal this season. Much of the focus has been on their push to end a 22-year wait for a Premier League title, overshadowing what has been an outstanding European campaign under Mikel Arteta. Arsenal secured their place in the final in Budapest after a 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid in the second leg of their semi-final. A first-half goal from Bukayo Saka sealed a 2-1 aggregate victory. While the performance at the Emirates Stadium was not their most dominant, Arsenal’s overall displays in Europe this season have been highly effective. They remain the only unbeaten side left in the competition, recording impressive wins against Bayern Munich, Inter Milan and Sporting CP. Their […]

Ukraine war traps Oleshky residents
Residents of Oleshky, a frontline city in southern Ukraine, say they are struggling to survive as ongoing fighting and widespread landmines cut them off from basic supplies and safe escape routes. Speaking by phone, a resident identified as Ludmilla described a deteriorating situation, with limited access to food and medicine. According to multiple accounts, the city has been largely isolated for months, raising serious humanitarian concerns. Local officials have warned of a growing crisis. While some aid deliveries have reached the area through volunteers and humanitarian groups, they remain irregular and costly. For many of the roughly 2,000 people still in the city, basic items such as pasta and canned food have become essential staples, often sourced from abandoned homes. Leaving Oleshky is considered extremely dangerous. The main exit route—dubbed the “Road of Death”—is believed to be heavily mined, with […]

FIFA president defends ‘astronomical’ 2026 World Cup ticket prices
FIFA president Gianni Infantino has defended the record high ticket prices for the 2026 World Cup despite mounting criticism from fans’ groups and commentators. Supporters have branded the pricing “extortionate” and “shameful,” with some seats for the final reportedly costing several thousand dollars. The most expensive ticket for the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar was around 1,600 dollars at face value, but for the 2026 final in North America the top category is now about 11,000 dollars. Even group stage matches range from around 140 dollars up to 2,735 dollars, with prices rising sharply in the knockout rounds. Infantino argued that FIFA has to “apply market rates” because the tournament is taking place in the United States, Canada and Mexico, where sports and entertainment pricing is already very high. He said demand has been “absolutely crazy,” with more than […]

Impressive Team Nigeria secure three World Relays spots in Gaborone
Team Nigeria delivered an impressive performance at the Debswana World Athletics Relays in Gaborone, Botswana, securing three qualification spots for next year’s World Championships. With a largely home based squad, the athletes rose to the occasion and ensured Nigeria will be represented in multiple relay events on the global stage. Nigeria’s biggest highlight came in the mixed 4x400m relay, where the quartet of Samson Nathaniel, Taiwo Kudoro, Chidi Okezie and Patience Okon George ran a season’s best of 3:12.88 to finish second in their heat. That result was enough to secure a ticket to the 2027 World Championships in Beijing and underlined the country’s growing strength in the one lap relay. The women’s 4x100m team also secured qualification after bouncing back from an earlier setback. Following a baton mishap that cost them in their first outing, the quartet of Rosemary […]

Super sub Iheanacho delighted after firing Celtic to the summit
Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho has expressed his excitement after coming off the bench to score the decisive goal that lifted Celtic to the top of the Scottish Premiership table. The Nigerian striker was once again the hero as his late strike sealed a 2 1 comeback win away to Hibernian at Easter Road. Celtic went ahead in the first half through Daizen Maeda, but Hibs captain Joe Newell levelled the game before the break despite the hosts being reduced to 10 men following Jamie McGrath’s red card. The visitors then piled on the pressure in the second period, creating chances but struggling to find a breakthrough until Iheanacho stepped up. Introduced as a second half substitute, Iheanacho made his impact in the 72nd minute when he calmly finished inside the box after Celtic forced another opening against the tiring […]
