Yuletide: Domestic Operator Faults Hike in Airfares

Less than three months after several domestic Nigerian airlines raised ticket prices to South-East and South-South destinations ahead of the Christmas period, Aero Contractors MD/CEO Captain Ado Sanusi has condemned the move, calling it a “wrong business model.” While acknowledging that airlines typically adjust fares based on supply and demand, Sanusi described the practice of hiking airfares during the Yuletide as unfair to travellers. Sanusi suggested airlines should better manage booking inventories, fare buckets, and advance sales rather than relying on last-minute price increases. He emphasized that although higher demand during the holidays justifies some price changes, unfair spikes undermine trust with customers. Aero Contractors Refunds ₦257m to Passengers in 8 Months

Aero Contractors has refunded over ₦257.1 million to passengers between January and August 2025, reflecting a 137% increase compared to 2024. According to data released on the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) official X handle, refunds totaled ₦257,195,724.39 in 2025, compared to ₦108,308,037.40 in 2024 and ₦32,766,652.30 in 2023. The airline also disclosed that it spent ₦6,083,229 on hotel accommodations for stranded passengers between January and July 2025. Verified expenses included bills with: Cocos Hotel and Grand Cubana Hotel, Abuja NOCY Castle Hotel and Kim Royal Hotel JC42 Apartment, Asaba Mayor & Diplomat Hotel, Lagos The refunds and accommodations follow the NCAA’s Part 19 Regulations (2023), which mandate airlines to process refunds promptly and compensate passengers affected by flight disruptions.
