2027: Support for Tinubu deepens rift in PDP

Fresh tension has erupted in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as internal divisions widen over whether the opposition party should back President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027 or present its own presidential candidate. A faction led by former minister Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, with the support of Oyo State governor Seyi Makinde, has firmly rejected any plan to adopt Tinubu, insisting it would be “improper” for an opposition party to endorse the flag bearer of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC. The rival camp, aligned with Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, is more open to supporting Tinubu and currently backs the National Caretaker Committee organising Sunday’s March 29 national convention in Abuja. This has left the PDP effectively split into two blocs, even as reconciliation talks continue and some court cases are expected to be withdrawn if a political […]

DeeOne: Obi can’t win 2027 with sympathy votes alone

Nigerian comedian and media personality DeeOne has said former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi cannot win the 2027 election by relying on sympathy votes. He advised Obi to change his campaign strategy and invest more resources if he is serious about defeating the ruling party. DeeOne argued that emotions and goodwill may have helped Obi gain traction in the 2023 election but will not be enough in 2027. He warned that underestimating President Bola Tinubu and his supporters, often referred to as the City Boy Movement, would be a major mistake. According to him, presidential campaigns require strong grassroots structures, logistics and funding. He criticised the “we no dey give shishi” posture linked to Obi’s movement, saying campaign workers need basic support such as food, transport and welfare on election day. DeeOne claimed that some Labour Party agents struggled […]

2027: Musawa warns APC against dropping Northern Muslim running mate

Minister of Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, has cautioned the All Progressives Congress (APC) against altering President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 presidential ticket in a way that removes a Northern Muslim running mate. She said such a move could cost the ruling party vital support across the core North. Speaking on Seun Okinbaloye’s Mic On Show, Musawa addressed debates over reviewing the Muslim–Muslim ticket used in 2023. She argued that dropping Vice President Kashim Shettima or replacing him with a non‑Northern Muslim would create serious political complications, given regional sensitivities. “If there is no Hausa, Fulani or Kanuri Muslim on that ticket, it creates a hurdle. That is the reality of the way people think,” she said, stressing that electoral politics in the North is shaped by long‑standing social and political structures. She listed Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Kebbi, […]

ICAN President Warns of Naira Devaluation After 2027 Elections

The President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Chidi Ajaegbu, has warned that the Naira could face another devaluation after the 2027 general elections. Speaking at a public lecture, Ajaegbu expressed concern that excessive government borrowing is creating future economic risks. He cited the "reckless" borrowing during the Buhari administration as a factor that scares away investors and could lead to currency instability. While the Naira has been relatively stable in recent months, Ajaegbu fears this may change post-2027. To avoid this, he advised the government to reduce its reliance on foreign loans, which often come with high consultancy fees. As an alternative, he strongly recommended that Nigeria turn to the capital market to raise long-term funds for infrastructure development, emphasizing that this requires accountability and a strong judiciary to combat corruption.
