Melissa Jefferson-Wooden storms to women’s 100m world title

Melissa Jefferson-Wooden delivered the race of her life to claim the women’s 100 metres world title on Sunday, clocking 10.61 seconds — a new championship record and the joint third-fastest time in history. The 24-year-old American held off a strong challenge from Jamaica’s rising star Tina Clayton, who secured silver in 10.76s, while Olympic champion Julien Alfred of Saint Lucia took bronze in 10.84s. There was no fairytale ending for sprint legend Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, competing in her final major individual event. The 38-year-old Jamaican, donning hair dyed in her national colours, placed sixth after struggling to match the pace of her younger rivals.
