Sinner books Djokovic showdown in Australian Open semi

Defending champion Jannik Sinner marched into the Australian Open semi finals on Wednesday with a dominant straight sets win over American Ben Shelton. The Italian second seed won 6 3, 6 4, 6 4 and has dropped only one set on his way to a sixth consecutive Grand Slam semi final. Sinner said he felt physically strong and was moving better with each match. He added that facing Novak Djokovic, a 24 time Grand Slam winner and 10 time champion in Melbourne, is exactly the kind of challenge top players prepare for every day. The win continued Sinner’s clear superiority over Shelton. He has now beaten the left hander in nine of their ten meetings, including their Australian Open semi final last year. CAF mulls new rules on goalkeepers’ towels after AFCON row

The Confederation of African Football may introduce stricter rules on the use of goalkeepers’ towels after controversial incidents at the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. Olivier Safari, president of the CAF Referees Committee, said the episodes exposed a gap in current regulations. The issue first drew attention during the semi final between Nigeria and hosts Morocco, when Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali was repeatedly distracted as stadium officials interfered with towels placed behind his goal. Videos of the scenes went viral and sparked criticism from fans and analysts over poor pitchside control. The matter intensified in the final, again involving the host nation. Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy also faced interference, with ball boys, stewards and players handling or removing his towels. In one widely shared clip, Morocco star Achraf Hakimi was seen taking Mendy’s towel from the goal area. […]

Man City vs Galatasaray: Osimhen’s side chase 250th UCL goal

Galatasaray will be chasing a historic milestone when they face Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, needing just two goals to become the first Turkish club to reach 250 goals in UEFA Champions League history. Both teams desperately need three points in tomorrow’s Matchday 8 clash to strengthen their positions in the revamped 36‑team league phase. Manchester City sit 11th with 13 points from seven matches, while Galatasaray are 17th with the same number of games played. Under the new format, the top eight sides qualify directly for the Round of 16, clubs finishing 9th to 24th enter a two‑legged play‑off, and those 25th or lower are eliminated outright without dropping into the Europa League. Pep Guardiola’s men have limited recent history against Turkish opposition, having only previously faced Fenerbahce in the 1968/69 European Cup, where City lost 2–1 on […]

Why I asked my mother before signing Greenwood – Longoria

Marseille president Pablo Longoria has revealed that he consulted his mother before approving the controversial signing of former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood in 2024, calling it one of the toughest decisions of his career. He said he wanted an opinion completely detached from football, money and club interests before giving the green light. Longoria explained that the club viewed Greenwood’s arrival as a huge sporting opportunity but carried out extensive due diligence on the case first. Greenwood was suspended by Manchester United in January 2022 following his arrest on suspicion of attempted rape, assault and coercive behaviour, with all charges later dropped in February 2023 after key witnesses withdrew. Speaking to The Telegraph, Longoria said he called his mother, Begona Longoria, a former prison system worker in Spain who once received a state medal for her service. ‘Your only hope is corners’ — Amad Diallo trolls Arsenal fan

Manchester United winger Amad Diallo has aimed a light-hearted dig at Arsenal after United’s dramatic 3–2 win over the Gunners at the Emirates on Sunday night. Liverpool contact Xabi Alonso over potential Anfield return

Liverpool have contacted the representatives of former midfielder Xabi Alonso to ask about his availability for a possible return to Anfield in the near future. The 44‑year‑old, who recently left Real Madrid by mutual consent after a difficult spell in charge, is said to have given a positive response to the initial approach from his old club. Alonso had previously turned down opportunities from both Bayern Munich and Liverpool in the spring of 2024, choosing instead to remain at Bayer Leverkusen, where he was enjoying a successful project. Liverpool’s latest move is described as an attempt to anticipate future developments and determine whether they can realistically count on him as a managerial option. The club’s hierarchy are balancing longstanding respect for Alonso’s legacy as a player with ongoing admiration for current manager Arne Slot, who remains in charge despite recent […]

Sinner ordered to remove banned wrist device at Australian Open

Jannik Sinner was told to remove a banned wrist device just minutes before his Australian Open fourth‑round clash with fellow Italian Luciano Darderi. The defending champion appeared on court wearing what looked like a Whoop fitness tracker under his wristband as he approached the net for the coin toss. Umpire Greg Allensworth spotted the device and immediately instructed Sinner to take it off, and the world No. 2 complied without protest. Images later showed he had tried to conceal the technology beneath his wristband, echoing earlier incidents in the tournament involving Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka, who were also told to remove similar gadgets. The incident came days after Sinner survived a gruelling match in extreme heat against Eliot Spizzirri, where he battled cramps and later admitted he was “lucky” with how the tournament’s heat rule was applied. Despite the […]
