UEFA opens investigation into alleged racial abuse of Vinicius Junior

UEFA has launched a formal investigation into alleged racial abuse directed at Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior during their Champions League knockout playoff clash against Benfica in Lisbon. The match at Estadio da Luz was halted early in the second half after the Brazilian, who had just scored the only goal in Madrid’s 1–0 win, complained to referee François Letexier that he had been racially insulted by Benfica forward Gianluca Prestianni. In a statement, the European football governing body said a UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector has been appointed “to investigate allegations of discriminatory behaviour” during the February 17 tie, adding that further information will be released in due course. Under UEFA’s disciplinary code, Prestianni could face a suspension of up to 10 matches if found guilty of racial abuse. Russian athletes: Ukrainian officials to boycott Paralympics

Ukrainian officials will boycott next month’s Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Paralympic Games after the International Paralympic Committee approved the participation of a small group of Russian and Belarusian athletes under their national flags. Sports Minister Matvii Bidnyi condemned the move as “outrageous”, arguing that allowing the symbols of countries waging war on Ukraine onto the Paralympic stage effectively endorses aggression and Kremlin propaganda. Under the IPC decision, six Russian and four Belarusian athletes will compete at the Games in Italy, marking the first time since the 2014 Sochi Paralympics that the Russian flag will be flown at a Paralympic event. Russia and Belarus had been largely excluded from international para sport following Moscow’s full scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, but member federations voted in September 2025 to lift their partial suspensions and restore full membership rights. Kyiv responded by […]

Nigeria’s Super Falcons will rekindle their fierce rivalry with the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon in a double header friendly series arranged as part of preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. The Nigeria Football Federation confirmed that the reigning African champions will face Cameroon in Yaoundé on Saturday, February 28, and again on Tuesday, March 3, during the FIFA women’s international window.

DR Congo eligibility row: FIFA silence keeps Super Eagles’ World Cup hopes in suspense

Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the 2026 World Cup through a petition against DR Congo remain in limbo as FIFA continues to delay a verdict on the eligibility case. The Nigeria Football Federation is challenging DR Congo’s use of several players in last November’s African playoff final, which the Super Eagles lost on penalties. The NFF alleges that some DR Congo stars held dual citizenship and did not fully comply with both Congolese law and FIFA’s nationality switch rules before playing in the tie. Officials argue that the Congolese federation misled FIFA during player clearance, and are pushing for DR Congo’s disqualification and Nigeria’s reinstatement into the intercontinental playoff in Mexico. Reports earlier suggested that FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee would announce its decision in February, giving clarity before the March 26–31 play‑off window. However, as at mid February, Nigerian officials say they […]

Osimhen: Napoli treated me like a dog, I had to leave

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has claimed he was treated “like a dog” by Napoli in the final months before his move to Turkish giants Galatasaray. He said the Italian club broke a gentleman’s agreement that would have allowed him to leave after signing a contract extension in 2023. Osimhen explained that when he renewed his deal in December 2023, there was a clear understanding that he would be free to depart the following summer if a good offer arrived. Instead, he alleged, Napoli tried to send him “everywhere” without respecting his wishes or the prior commitment. “They tried to send me to play everywhere, treating me like a dog. Go here, go there, do this, do that,” he said in an interview with Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport. “I worked so hard to build my career; I couldn’t accept […]

Europe watch: Onuachu scores again as Sadiq impresses for Valencia

Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu continued his fine scoring form in Turkey, netting again for Trabzonspor at the weekend. The towering forward headed in his 16th league goal of the season, although his side eventually lost 3–2 to title chasing Fenerbahce. Onuachu had the chance to complete a brace late in the game but missed a penalty, bringing an end to his previously flawless spot kick record this season. Despite the defeat, his consistent scoring run keeps him among the most in form Nigerian forwards in Europe. In Spain, Sadiq Umar impressed for Valencia with another lively display as he continues to rebuild his career in La Liga. Super Eagles line up Jordan friendly as World Cup fate hangs on FIFA ruling

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have scheduled an international friendly against Jordan in Amman next month, even as their 2026 World Cup fate remains uncertain. The match is expected to hold during the March 23–31 FIFA window and would be the first ever senior meeting between the two countries. Jordan, nicknamed The Chivalrous Ones, will use the game as part of preparations for their debut World Cup appearance, where they will face Argentina, Algeria and Austria in the group stage. For Nigeria, the fixture is designed to keep the team active and assess new players while waiting for FIFA’s verdict on their eligibility protest against DR Congo. The Nigeria Football Federation has challenged DR Congo’s use of several players in last year’s African play off final, claiming they switched allegiance without fully meeting FIFA rules and referencing dual citizenship issues. A decision […]
