UCL: Lookman’s strike seals Atlético semi-final spot over Barcelona

Nigeria international Ademola Lookman scored the decisive goal that sent Atlético Madrid into the UEFA Champions League semi-finals at the expense of Barcelona. Despite losing 2–1 on the night at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, Diego Simeone’s side advanced 3–2 on aggregate thanks to their 2–0 first-leg victory at Camp Nou. Barcelona made a fast start in the second leg, with Lamine Yamal opening the scoring in the fourth minute before Ferran Torres struck soon after to level the tie on aggregate and put pressure on Atlético. However, moments after play resumed following an injury to Fermín López, Atlético hit back on the counter, and Lookman calmly finished a low cross from Marcos Llorente in the 31st minute to restore the Spaniards’ aggregate lead. In the second half, Barcelona piled on the pressure in search of more goals, but Atlético’s defence […]

Refereeing v Atletico ‘a robbery’ – Barca’s Raphinha

Barcelona forward Raphinha has branded the refereeing in their Champions League quarter-final defeat to Atletico Madrid “a robbery.” Barca exited 3–2 on aggregate despite a 2–1 win in Tuesday’s second leg, having lost the first leg 2–0 at home. In both matches a Barcelona defender was sent off after a yellow card was upgraded to red when the referee, on VAR advice, reviewed a potential denial of a goalscoring opportunity on the pitchside monitor. Pau Cubarsi was dismissed by Istvan Kovacs in the first leg, while fellow defender Eric Garcia was sent off by French referee Clement Turpin in the second. Kovacs and video assistant referee Christian Dingert were also criticised by Barcelona after they allowed play to continue when Atletico defender Marc Pubill handled the ball in his own penalty area from what appeared to be a goal-kick situation. Spurs captain Romero out for rest of season with injury

Tottenham captain Cristian Romero is set to miss the rest of the season after suffering a knee injury in his side’s 1–0 defeat at Sunderland. The 27‑year‑old Argentina defender looked visibly upset as he limped off following a collision with goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky during Sunday’s Premier League clash at the Stadium of Light. There were immediate fears he could be sidelined long term, ruling him out of Spurs’ final six league games as they battle to avoid relegation. Medical tests have now confirmed those fears, with Romero expected to be out for up to eight weeks after being diagnosed with a high‑grade partial tear of his medial cruciate ligament. His participation in this summer’s World Cup with Argentina is also in serious doubt, with the injury timeline leaving his chances “hanging in the balance.” Romero’s absence is a major blow […]

UEFA reject Barca handball complaint before Atletico return

UEFA has rejected Barcelona’s complaint over a controversial handball incident in their Champions League quarter‑final first leg defeat to Atletico Madrid, just hours before the return leg. Atletico won the first game 2–0 at Camp Nou, but Barcelona were furious that no penalty was awarded when defender Marc Pubill appeared to handle the ball after receiving what looked like a goal kick inside the area. “After the first leg, Barcelona filed a protest relating to a referee decision. On 13 April 2026, the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body declared the protest to be inadmissible,” UEFA said in a statement. The Catalan club had described the decision not to give a spot kick as a “major error” that affected the outcome of the match and criticised the fact that Romanian referee Istvan Kovacs was not asked by VAR to review […]

Man City will have ‘psychological edge’ over Arsenal in title showdown – Rooney

Wayne Rooney says Manchester City will hold a psychological advantage over Arsenal in the Premier League title race because of their experience and composure in decisive moments. Speaking ahead of Sunday’s blockbuster clash at the Etihad Stadium, the former Manchester United striker noted that City’s familiarity with winning titles under Pep Guardiola gives them a mental edge. He argued that Guardiola and his players are better equipped to stay calm under pressure than Arsenal’s relatively younger squad. “I think City will have the edge on that, just purely the manager and players they’ve got. They will be able to stay a little calmer than the Arsenal players,” Rooney said on The Wayne Rooney Show. He added that teams on a poor run of results often slip into a negative mindset that can damage performance. “When you go on a run […]

Yamal tells Barcelona: sign ‘red‑hot’ Osimhen

Barcelona teenage star Lamine Yamal has reportedly urged the club’s hierarchy to sign Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen in the summer transfer window. According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, the 18‑year‑old winger believes Osimhen would transform Barcelona’s attack next season and has personally backed the Nigerian’s arrival. Yamal is said to have told club chiefs that Osimhen’s movement, pace and physicality would stretch opposition defences and ease the pressure on him in the final third. He reportedly argued that the striker’s constant runs in behind would create more space and chances for Barcelona’s creative players. Barcelona are planning for life after veteran forward Robert Lewandowski, whose contract is due to expire at the end of the season. With Ferran Torres also linked with a possible exit, the Catalan giants are actively assessing options to lead their frontline. Osimhen, 27, has been […]

Boniface admits battling depression after tough year

Super Eagles forward Victor Boniface has revealed that he has been battling depression after a difficult year marked by injuries, criticism and failed transfer moves. The Bayer Leverkusen striker, whose rise had looked unstoppable, has seen his momentum slowed by a series of physical and emotional setbacks over the past 12 months. In a brief message on his X page, he wrote in pidgin English, “Depression real die,” a short but powerful statement that captured the weight of what he has been going through. Boniface’s troubles began with a groin injury in early 2024 that required surgery and ruled him out of the Africa Cup of Nations. Later that year, he suffered a thigh injury on international duty, cutting short a promising season. Matters got worse when knee problems resurfaced, forcing him to undergo another surgery in January 2026. The […]

Arsenal title hopes suffer setback in Bournemouth defeat

Arsenal’s Premier League title hopes were dealt a major blow as they lost 2 1 at home to Bournemouth at the Emirates Stadium. Victory would have given the Gunners a 12 point lead over second placed Manchester City before Pep Guardiola’s side play Chelsea on Sunday, but instead they missed the chance to stretch their advantage. Bournemouth started the game more confidently and took the lead when Junior Kroupi finished from close range after Adrien Truffert’s deflected cross fell kindly to him in the box. Arsenal responded before half time and levelled when Viktor Gyokeres smashed in a penalty after Ryan Christie was penalised for handball while trying to block a shot. With the score at 1 1 and tension rising, Mikel Arteta turned to his bench in the second half, introducing Eberechi Eze, Leandro Trossard and 16 year old […]
