Mohamed Salah took part in Liverpool training on Monday but is not expected to be in the squad to face Inter Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday. The session was held at Anfield before the team’s trip to Italy and was open to the media.
The 33 year old forward recently granted a tense interview in which he said he felt thrown under the bus by the club during a difficult season. He also stated that his relationship with head coach Arne Slot had broken down.
Salah was an unused substitute in Liverpool’s 3 3 draw at Leeds United at the weekend, the third consecutive match he has started on the bench. In the previous two games he came on as a substitute in a 1 1 home draw with Sunderland and remained on the bench in a 2 0 win away to West Ham.
His last start for Liverpool was in a 4 1 home defeat to PSV Eindhoven in a Champions League group match. His most recent goal came in a 2 0 win at Aston Villa on November 1. So far this season he has scored five goals in 18 appearances across the Premier League and Champions League.
Overall Salah has scored 250 goals in 420 appearances for Liverpool. His 29 league goals in the 2024 25 season helped the club win the Premier League title. He joined Liverpool from Roma in 2017 and signed a new two year contract in April.
Former England striker Wayne Rooney, now a BBC Sport pundit, believes Salah is damaging his legacy at Anfield with his recent actions and comments. Rooney has argued that Slot should not use him against Inter or in the upcoming home game against Brighton.
Liverpool’s match against Brighton comes just before Salah is due to join the Egypt national team for the Africa Cup of Nations. Salah said he plans to enjoy that fixture at Anfield because he does not know what will happen next with his future.
He added that he intends to say goodbye to the fans at Anfield before traveling to the tournament with Egypt. Salah admitted he is uncertain about what will happen once he links up with the national team.
