The Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry, has expressed his gratitude to families pursuing legal action against Instagram and YouTube, praising them for “telling your stories over and over again.” The remarks came during an emotional address to bereaved parents following the start of a landmark trial in California examining whether the platforms harm young people’s mental health.
Families involved in the case allege that the platforms are addictive by design, claims denied by lawyers for YouTube and Meta, Instagram’s parent company. In footage shared with BBC Breakfast, Prince Harry said he hopes the trial will bring “truth, justice and accountability.”
Addressing the parents, the prince acknowledged the emotional weight of the proceedings. “None of you should be here,” he said, speaking with a visible tremor. “Thank you for doing everything that you’ve done. Thank you for telling your stories over and over again. Truth, justice and accountability: those are the three things that will come from this.”
Ellen Roome, whose 14-year-old son Jools Sweeney died after participating in an online challenge, attended the trial in the US. She described the case as “the first of its kind” and said it highlights the dangers of harmful social media content for children. Roome stressed the importance of holding tech companies accountable, noting that platforms like Instagram and YouTube have often operated as “a law unto their own.”
Prince Harry has long campaigned for stronger protections for children online, and this case aligns with his efforts. Meta has previously introduced features to safeguard teen users, including content filters for Instagram accounts under 16, while YouTube also provides measures to restrict content for younger audiences.
The California trial could have wider implications, potentially influencing related cases in the United States where multiple states are seeking stricter regulations on Meta platforms.
