The Anambra State governorship election saw over 2.8 million registered voters going to the polls to choose the next governor. The election featured 16 candidates, including the current governor Professor Chukwuma Soludo, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, and Sir Paul Chukwuma among others. The election took place across 5,718 polling units with more than 24,000 ad hoc staff deployed and 6,879 BVAS devices for accreditation.
The election day was marked by a high turnout, with voters of all ages coming out to participate. Notable moments included a 110-year-old man, Pa Onwujiobi Nwafor, casting his vote in Aguata and other elderly citizens taking part, demonstrating strong community engagement.
Some challenges were reported, such as delays at certain polling units and a woman, Mrs. Elizabeth Onike, being unable to vote due to not having her card. Officials worked to resolve issues as they arose.
The Independent National Electoral Commission confirmed that 98.8% of Permanent Voter Cards had been collected. Election observers and candidates called for a peaceful process, with assurances that only one winner would emerge.
Election materials and law enforcement officers were seen across the state to ensure a smooth process. The polls opened at 8:30 am and residents were encouraged to stay informed as counting and announcement of results progressed.
