Ghana Loses 3,000 ha Mangroves – Journalists Step Up

Recent environmental assessments show Ghana has lost approximately 3,000 hectares of mangrove forest across its coastal zones—driven by illegal logging, pollution, urban expansion, and over-harvesting. In response, journalists and media groups are mobilizing to spotlight the issue and build public momentum for restoration and policy action. Why This Matters Mangrove ecosystems provide critical benefits: They act as coastal buffers, support fish nurseries, store carbon, and protect communities from erosion and storm surges. Their loss jeopardizes biodiversity and coastal resilience. Accelerated deforestation: Ghana has lost around 24 % of its mangrove cover between 1980 and 2010, with continued degradation leading up to recent losses of 3,000 ha. Journalists Take ActionMedia professionals trained in environmental and forest management reporting are now leading coverage that exposes damaging activities like illegal harvesting and pollution. Journalism associations are advocating press freedom and broader campaigns to demand accountability. […]

NDC Accused of Seizing Lands & Mass Dismissals

Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, MP for Assin South and Ranking Member of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, has laid out serious allegations against the ruling NDC. He accuses them of illegally seizing state lands and mass firing public sector workers—acts he warns erode public trust and fuel widespread discontent. Alleged State Land Grabs Former Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul previously claimed that the NDC “has sold more state lands to private individuals than the NPP,” suggesting widespread cronyism and irregular transactions during past administration periods—all tied to the party’s entrenched practices. Fordjour builds on that narrative, warning that land sequestration under NDC rule isn’t a thing of the past—it’s continuing with impunity. Though he hasn't named specific sites, his broader charge positions the party at the center of a legacy of state land misuse. Mass Terminations at Play Alongside land grievances, […]

Dr Apea Defends Ato Essien Over GH¢90 M Capital Bank Loan

Dr John Apea, a respected figure at the Commonwealth’s human rights office, recently made waves by questioning the narrative around William Ato Essien—the founder of the now-defunct Capital Bank. According to Dr Apea, the controversial GH¢90 million wasn't stolen—it was a loan, and Essien was wrongly painted as a thief. What Dr Apea Is Saying He challenged the story that Essien misappropriated GH¢90 million. Instead, he says that figure refers to liquidity support disbursed by the Bank of Ghana—a loan the bank repaid diligently. Essien earned a finder’s fee of GH¢27.5 million, a standard arrangement for facilitating such loans—not illicit income. The bank continued paying monthly dues of GH¢14.4 million without default, even repaying over GH¢308 million before being closed. Dr Apea also points to a strange irony: the Managing Director of Capital Bank, who approved the fee payment, was acquitted, yet Essien was convicted for simply receiving it. How […]
