Details emerge on 16 detained officers over alleged coup

Fresh details have emerged about the identities of 16 Nigerian military officers reportedly detained over the alleged foiled coup of October 1. According to reliable sources, 14 of the detainees are from the Nigerian Army, including one brigadier general, one colonel, four lieutenant colonels, five majors, two captains, and one lieutenant. The remaining two officers include a Lieutenant Commander from the Navy and a Squadron Leader from the Air Force, both equivalent in rank to a major. Reports suggest that most of the Army officers belong to the Infantry Corps, while one serves in the Signals Corps and another in the Ordnance Corps. Many of them are graduates of the 56th Regular Course of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), which ran between September 2004 and October 2008. Six of these officers were among the first to be arrested. The other […]

FG unveils automated customs payment system to ease foreign parcel clearance

The Federal Government on Thursday unveiled the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) Automated Payment Solution for inbound international delivery items — a landmark innovation aimed at simplifying customs payments and improving transparency for businesses and citizens involved in cross-border trade. The event, held in Abuja, marked a major step in NIPOST’s digital transformation drive under the supervision of the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani. Represented by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Rafiu Adeladan, the minister said the collaboration between NIPOST and private-sector partners — Paystack, Sendbox, and Messenger — demonstrates how innovation and partnership can redefine public service delivery in Nigeria. “This collaboration between NIPOST and its private-sector partners shows what happens when government institutions stop working in isolation and start working in partnership with innovators, with technology, and with citizens at the centre of our thinking,” […]

Tinubu decorates new service chiefs at Presidential Villa

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday decorated Nigeria’s newly appointed service chiefs with their official ranks during a ceremony held at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The event, which began shortly after 2 p.m., was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima and the spouses of the decorated officers, all dressed in their respective service uniforms. Those decorated were General Olufemi Oluyede as Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant-General Wahidi Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff, Air Marshal Kennedy Aneke as Chief of Air Staff, and Vice Admiral Idi Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff. The Senate confirmed the four officers on Wednesday after a two-hour closed-door screening session focused on strategies to strengthen national security and improve coordination among the armed forces. Tinubu had earlier written to the Senate seeking a speedy confirmation to “ensure continuity in the nation’s […]

Three dead, others injured in multiple crash on Lagos-Ibadan expressway

At least three people, including a police inspector, have been confirmed dead following a multiple-vehicle crash involving five articulated trucks on Kara Bridge, inward Mowe, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olanrewaju Ishola, confirmed the incident on Thursday at the scene of the crash. “We have a case of multiple accidents at the border between Ogun and Lagos State. Five vehicles were involved — all articulated trucks. Precisely, three people have been rescued from the scene,” Ishola said. He added that emergency teams, including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), and other security agencies, were deployed early to assist with rescue operations. Preliminary investigations revealed that the accident was caused by a trailer that suffered brake failure. “At the beginning, we have a trailer that failed brake, and it is […]

UPDATED: Tinubu reverses Maryam Sanda’s pardon, reduces sentence to 12 years imprisonment

President Bola Tinubu has reversed the presidential pardon earlier granted to Maryam Sanda, who was sentenced to death in 2020 for killing her husband, Bilyaminu Bello, the son of former PDP chairman, Haliru Bello. In an official gazette released on Wednesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Sanda’s clemency has been reviewed. Her death sentence was converted to a 12-year jail term, meaning she will serve approximately six more years, having already spent six years and eight months in custody at the Suleja Medium Security Custodial Centre. The gazette, titled “Reduced Terms,” stated that Sanda’s new sentence was approved on “compassionate grounds, in the best interest of her children and due to her good conduct, remorse, and reformation while in custody.” The review follows widespread criticism of the President’s initial pardon list, which […]

Tinubu reviews clemency list, drops high-risk offenders, orders secretariat’s relocation

President Bola Tinubu has approved a revised list of individuals to benefit from his constitutional prerogative of mercy, granting pardons and sentence reductions to selected convicts. The review followed consultations with the Council of State and public criticism of the initial list released earlier in October. According to the Presidency, the review was conducted under Section 175(1) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution, which empowers the president to grant pardons and exercise clemency. Individuals convicted of serious crimes, including kidnapping, drug trafficking, human trafficking, fraud, and illegal possession of firearms, were removed from the list. Some offenders previously slated for pardon had their sentences reduced instead of being fully released. The Presidency said the review considered the seriousness of offences, impact on victims, national security concerns, and Nigeria’s international obligations. The final list has been sent to the Nigerian Correctional […]

Coalition faults push for Sharia law, cites breach of 1999 constitution

A coalition of civil rights and faith-based organisations has condemned renewed efforts to expand the implementation of Sharia law in Nigeria, describing it as a violation of the 1999 Constitution and a threat to national unity and human rights. The coalition, operating under the banner End Sharia Now, includes groups such as One Nation One Law, Global Network of Christian Faith and Truth, and Love a Muslim Ministry. In a statement signed by Benson Sunday on Wednesday, the coalition said attempts to institutionalise Sharia beyond personal faith practices contradict the Constitution’s secular foundation. Responding to comments from some Islamic scholars who argued that there was “no justification for opposing Sharia in Nigeria,” the coalition cited sections 10 and 42 of the 1999 Constitution, which prohibit the adoption of any state religion and guarantee equality of all citizens regardless of faith. NASU accuses govt of neglecting workers welfare

The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) has accused the Federal Government of playing politics with the welfare of Nigerian workers. The union said officials often provoke strikes through neglect and insincerity, only to punish workers for exercising their rights. Speaking at the opening of NASU’s National Executive Council meeting in Abuja, the General Secretary, Prince Peters Adeyemi, criticised the government’s frequent threats to apply the “No Work, No Pay” policy. He described the move as a deliberate attempt to intimidate workers and criminalise legitimate union activities. Adeyemi said such behaviour exposes the government’s double standards and undermines industrial peace and workers’ confidence. He explained that unions only embark on strikes after the government repeatedly fails to honour agreements and ignores collective bargaining processes. “Union leaders are not irrational individuals who declare strikes for fun. Strikes are […]

Nigeria’s Economy Grows But Poverty Still Rising – Report

A new economic report reveals a difficult reality for Nigeria: while the national economy is showing signs of recovery, the number of people living in poverty continues to increase. The report by Quartus Economics states that Nigeria's economy began to stabilize and grow in 2024. It credits this improvement to the "bold but necessary" reforms implemented by President Bola Tinubu in 2023, primarily the removal of the costly fuel subsidy. However, this economic growth has not yet translated into better living conditions for many citizens. The report highlights that the damage from the previous decade (2014-2023) was severe. During that time, the economy shrank significantly in dollar terms while the population grew by over 40 million people. This combination of a smaller economy and a larger population pushed an additional 65 million Nigerians below the poverty line. The report concludes […]

Dangote Redeploys Sacked Refinery Engineers to Remote Posts

The Dangote Group has rehired the engineers it dismissed last month from its refinery, but is reassigning them to remote locations across Nigeria, including states with security concerns. The engineers, some of whom were graduate trainees, have been offered new positions under "Dangote Projects Limited." Their new postings are to sites in Borno, Zamfara, Benue, Ebonyi, Kebbi, Niger, and Sokoto states. These assignments include a coal mine in Benue, road construction sites, and rice processing plants. According to the offer letters, the employees have 14 days to report to their new locations or face termination. However, the affected workers have raised serious concerns. They state that the letters do not provide specific office addresses in these states and that some of the postings are in areas known for insecurity. The workers' union, PENGASSAN, has advised them not to accept the […]
