The Truth About Nigeria’s Tax Reform on Investment Income and Personal Savings

Recent claims that Nigeria’s Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) is introducing new taxes on personal savings have sparked confusion. In reality, the withholding tax on interest income from Treasury bills, bonds, and promissory notes is not a new policy—it has been enforced under the Companies Income Tax Act (CITA) for years. The renewed enforcement simply reminds financial institutions to deduct tax at the source on investment earnings. Importantly, the tax does not apply to the principal saved, but to the interest earned. There is no increase or expansion of taxes since the current administration took office; the public notice only reinforces compliance with existing law. While savings accounts themselves are not taxed, interest generated from savings constitutes taxable income and is taxed accordingly. A temporary exemption on these earnings expired last year, and renewed enforcement aligns with global practices to […]

NDLEA Strengthens Maritime Operations, Trains Officers in UK

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has enhanced its maritime surveillance and interdiction capabilities after officers completed specialized training in the United Kingdom and Lagos. Led by DCN Aminu Danjuma Jega, the six-man NDLEA team visited UK maritime and border enforcement facilities from October 19–25, 2025. Guided by Mr. Errol Flynn Macdonald of the UK Home Office, they received hands-on exposure to best practices in maritime intelligence, port security, and inter-agency coordination. The training included demonstrations at Tilbury and Felixstowe ports where inward-bound Nigerian containers were screened using layered inspection and risk-based procedures. Officers witnessed live presentations by the UK National Deep Rummaging Team and learned advanced vessel rummage and drug detection techniques. In Lagos, 19 additional NDLEA officers underwent Advanced Container Targeting training from November 10–13, conducted by HOIO Intelligence. A key highlight was the Advanced Sea Searcher […]

No Religious Persecution, Genocide in Nigeria — FG, AU Refute Trump’s Claims

The Nigerian Federal Government and African Union have firmly rejected claims of religious persecution and Christian genocide within Nigeria, labelling the allegations as false and damaging to the country’s image. Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Tuggar demanded the full airing of his interview with Piers Morgan for transparency, arguing that selective edits could distort Nigeria’s reality and fuel false narratives. Information Minister Mohammed Idris emphasized that Nigeria guarantees religious freedom for all residents, stating that terrorism affects both Christians and Muslims indiscriminately, and is not religiously motivated. The government highlighted ongoing investments in security architecture to address terror and banditry, not religious conflict. African Union chair Mahamoud Ali Youssouf supported this by noting that Boko Haram’s primary victims are Muslims rather than Christians, and that labeling ongoing insecurity as genocide oversimplifies complex security challenges in Nigeria’s North. Nigerian Christian leaders, […]

Two NNPP Reps Dump Party for APC Over Leadership Crisis

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in the House of Representatives has gained two new members after NNPP lawmakers Abdulmuminu Jibrin and Sagir Ibrahim Koki from Kano defected over unresolved leadership crises. The Speaker, Abbas Tajudeen, announced their defection at Thursday’s plenary. Jibrin, chair of the House Committee on Housing, resigned from NNPP and the Kwakwasiya movement earlier in the week, citing “irreconcilable differences within the leadership” at state and national levels. Sagir Koki also cited the inability to properly consult and represent his constituency due to party issues. Their defection comes just a day after a Kaduna PDP House member also joined APC, signaling further realignment ahead of 2027 elections. Members blame internal conflict for hampering their ability to serve constituents and believe switching to APC offers greater stability and representation.

World Bank Criticises Nigeria’s Social Protection System, Only 44% of Benefits Reach Poor

The World Bank has criticized the effectiveness of Nigeria’s social protection programmes, revealing in its latest report that only 44% of government-run benefits reach poor households, despite 56% of enrolled beneficiaries being classified as poor. The main flaw is fixed allocations per household, which dilute support for larger, poorer families. The National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme (NHGSFP), which targets individual pupils, achieves better coverage, but its reach is limited and not nationwide. Social protection spending is extremely low—just 0.14% of GDP, far below the 1.5% global average and 1.1% Sub-Saharan Africa average. The overall impact on poverty reduction is minimal: all safety-net programmes together lower poverty by only 0.4 percentage points. The National Social Safety Nets Programme (NASSP), using the National Social Registry (NSR) to identify vulnerable populations, performs better, reducing poverty by 4.3 percentage points for beneficiaries. Nigeria overwhelmingly […]

2 Nigerians Rescued, 2 Missing After Deadly Shipwreck on Mediterranean – IOM

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) reports that two Nigerian nationals were rescued while two others remain missing following a fatal shipwreck in the Mediterranean. The vessel, carrying 49 migrants and refugees, departed Zuwara, Libya, on November 3 but capsized six hours later due to engine failure caused by high waves. Of the 49 passengers—47 men and two women—42 are missing and presumed dead, and seven were rescued, including two Nigerians. Survivors received emergency medical care and support from IOM. The missing include 29 Sudanese, eight Somalis, three Cameroonians, and two Nigerians. This latest tragedy pushes the 2025 death toll in the Central Mediterranean past 1,000, making it the world's deadliest migration route since 2014, with over 25,600 deaths or disappearances. Dangerous smuggling methods, unseaworthy vessels, and gaps in rescue capacity contribute to high fatalities. IOM called for more effective […]

Wike Deserves National Apology Over Clash With Naval Officer — PANDEF

The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has called for a national apology to the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, following his clash with a naval officer in Abuja. PANDEF National Chairman, Ambassador Godknows Igali, urged President Tinubu to direct security agencies to investigate fully and bring those responsible to book, emphasizing respect for civil authority and professionalism in the military. Igali described the officer’s actions as a show of disdain for Wike’s office and an affront to presidential authority, noting Wike as one of the administration’s best-performing ministers. PANDEF insisted military personnel should not be used for non-core duties like guarding personal properties, and that Wike deserves both protection and respect while carrying out his official mandates in the FCT. The organization warned against glamorizing military insubordination and criticized retired officers allegedly issuing illegal orders.

Tinubu Backs NGE’s Proposal for Media Tax Relief, VAT Exemption

President Bola Tinubu has formally endorsed the Nigeria Guild of Editors’ (NGE) call for government support of the struggling media industry, including corporate tax relief for ten years, VAT exemption, affordable financing, and the repeal of laws that inhibit press freedom. Speaking at the All Nigeria Editors Conference, Tinubu acknowledged the distress in the sector, rising costs, and the urgent need for intervention to preserve journalism’s role in democracy. Tinubu urged editors to perform their gate-keeping duties with fairness and patriotism, warning that irresponsible reporting could harm national unity.
