President Bola Tinubu has formally endorsed the Nigeria Guild of Editors’ (NGE) call for government support of the struggling media industry, including corporate tax relief for ten years, VAT exemption, affordable financing, and the repeal of laws that inhibit press freedom. Speaking at the All Nigeria Editors Conference, Tinubu acknowledged the distress in the sector, rising costs, and the urgent need for intervention to preserve journalism’s role in democracy.
Tinubu urged editors to perform their gate-keeping duties with fairness and patriotism, warning that irresponsible reporting could harm national unity. He recognized media’s historic contributions during Nigeria’s military era and affirmed the vital importance of press freedom.
NGE president Eze Anaba outlined proposals such as tax credits for advertisers, low-interest loans, and a Media Innovation Fund to support digital storytelling and news platforms. Tinubu assured stakeholders that media tax exemptions would be addressed, and emphasized balance, verification, and national interest in reporting. Governor Hope Uzodimma also called on editors to promote electoral integrity and rebuild public trust as 2027 elections approach.
