EFCC challenges court order releasing Okwete’s 27 houses

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has filed an appeal against a Federal High Court judgment that ordered the release of 27 properties linked to businessman James Ikechukwu Okwete. Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Abuja division had earlier vacated an interim forfeiture order on the houses and directed the EFCC to immediately return the properties and documents to Okwete, his company Jamec West African Limited, and another claimant, Adebukunola Iyabode Oladapo. The judge ruled that the anti graft agency failed to prove that the assets were proceeds of unlawful activity, holding that affidavits and documents submitted by the owners showed legitimate acquisition and therefore had merit. In its notice of appeal lodged at the Abuja Court of Appeal, the EFCC is asking the appellate court to set aside the decision, arguing that the trial judge erred in law by dismissing […]

US slams visa ban on Nigerians linked to anti-Christian attacks

The United States has announced new visa bans targeting Nigerians accused of involvement in anti-Christian violence and other serious violations of religious freedom. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the restrictions would apply to individuals who knowingly direct, authorise, fund, support or carry out attacks and abuses against Christians and other religious minorities, as well as to their immediate family members. He explained that the decision was a response to mass killings and violence linked to radical Islamist groups, Fulani militias and other armed actors in Nigeria, and warned that the same policy could be used against abusers in other countries. The visa measures are being implemented under Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the US Immigration and Nationality Act, which allows Washington to deny entry to foreign nationals whose presence is considered against US foreign policy or security interests. Although the […]

No more ransom, no talks with terrorists, says Defence Minister

Defence Minister General Christopher Musa has declared that there should be no more negotiations or ransom payments to terrorists in Nigeria, insisting that such actions only strengthen criminal groups. Speaking during his ministerial screening and in comments highlighted by the Ministry of Defence, Musa warned that paying ransom gives terrorists money and time to regroup, re-arm and plan fresh attacks, noting that some communities that negotiated were later attacked again. He urged all levels of government to adopt a united position against negotiating with terrorists or bandits, stressing that ransom payments must stop if Nigeria is serious about ending kidnappings and insurgency. Musa also pointed out that Nigeria’s banking and digital payment systems can be used more effectively to trace ransom money and disrupt terrorist financing networks when supported by a unified national database and stronger security coordination. The minister […]

Trump’s Moves on Nigeria Driven by Oil, Says Bakare

Pastor Tunde Bakare has claimed that President Donald Trump’s decision to list Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” and speak of Christian genocide is tied to a strategic push for Nigeria’s oil and other key assets. Speaking during a State of the Nation Address in Lagos, he said the Trump administration sees Nigeria’s oil wealth, mineral resources, real estate and role in emerging technologies as central to its foreign and economic agenda. Bakare said he believed Trump’s interest in Nigeria was confirmed by a vision he had shortly after Trump’s 2024 election victory, in which the US leader arrived in Lagos dressed in traditional Arab clothing and declared, “We are here now.” He interpreted this as a sign of deep economic and geopolitical interest linked to Middle East politics, oil and gas, property and Nigeria’s growing technology ecosystem, with […]
