Report: Why ex defence minister Badaru really resigned

Fresh details have emerged suggesting that former Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, was pressured to resign not only over health concerns but also because of a long running rift with Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, and mounting criticism of his handling of insecurity. Badaru, who was appointed defence minister in August 2023 after serving two terms as Jigawa State governor, formally resigned on Monday after about two years in office, with the Presidency announcing that he stepped down due to “poor health”, while President Bola Tinubu immediately swore in former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa (retd.), as his replacement. However, multiple senior defence ministry and military sources told Saturday Punch that a “frosty relationship” between Badaru and Matawalle had quietly destabilised parts of the ministry’s work for months, even though both men maintained a cordial […]

EFCC returns N96.5m to Enugu Ponzi scheme victims

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has returned N96.5 million to victims of a Ponzi investment scheme in Enugu State. The refund was made through the EFCC’s Enugu zonal command, which said the recovered funds represented part of the money traced to bank accounts linked to the fraudulent scheme’s operators. According to the commission, dozens of victims had lodged complaints after being lured with promises of high, quick returns on investments that later collapsed without repayment. EFCC officials said efforts were ongoing to track more assets, prosecute those behind the scam and recover additional funds so that more victims can receive refunds. The agency advised Nigerians to be wary of any platform offering unrealistic profits, warning that many such schemes are disguised Ponzi operations designed to defraud unsuspecting investors.

Maresca slams ‘very poor’ Chelsea after Leeds loss

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has described his team’s performance as “very poor” after a 3 1 defeat away to struggling Leeds United dealt a fresh blow to their Premier League title hopes. Leeds, who had lost their previous four league games and were sitting near the relegation zone, raced into a 2 0 first half lead through goals from Jaka Bijol and Ao Tanaka before Pedro Neto briefly gave Chelsea hope after the break. A defensive mistake by Tosin Adarabioyo allowed Dominic Calvert Lewin to restore Leeds’ two goal cushion, sealing a result that leaves Chelsea nine points behind leaders Arsenal and ends an eight match unbeaten run in all competitions. Maresca said his players were second best “in all aspects”, insisting that Leeds were sharper on the ball, off the ball and in duels, and admitted there was “nothing” […]
