Court rejects Nnamdi Kanu’s bid to leave Sokoto prison

The Federal High Court in Abuja has rejected an application by IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu seeking to be moved from the Sokoto Correctional Centre to a custodial facility closer to Abuja. Kanu had asked to be transferred to Kuje Custodial Centre in the Federal Capital Territory or Keffi Custodial Centre in Nasarawa State. He made the request through the Legal Aid Council in an ex parte application, arguing that a transfer would help him effectively pursue his appeal. In the alternative, he asked to be moved to any facility within the court’s jurisdiction, including Suleja or Keffi. Justice James Omotosho declined to grant the request on Monday, ruling that such an order could not be made without hearing from the Federal Government. The judge held that the government and other parties must be given the chance to respond before any […]

Boko Haram has lasted longer than civil war Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo says the Boko Haram insurgency has now lasted for about 15 years, making it longer than the Nigerian civil war. He described the prolonged conflict as a serious failure in addressing insecurity and development challenges in the country. Obasanjo spoke while comparing the three year civil war to the insurgency which began around 2009 and has continued despite several military operations. He said the situation shows that Nigeria has not tackled the root causes of extremism, including poverty, unemployment and poor governance. He also warned that long running conflicts weaken national unity and drain resources that should be used for education, health and infrastructure. As the Senate begins screening President Bola Tinubu’s 65 ambassadorial nominees, at least five candidates are drawing intense scrutiny over past corruption probes, audit reports and inflammatory public statements, raising questions about their suitability to represent Nigeria abroad. Opposition parties, civil society groups and critics accuse the President of using key diplomatic postings to reward loyalists and controversial figures, particularly faulting the inclusion of former INEC chairman Mahmood Yakubu and several politically exposed nominees. Among those flagged is ex National Intelligence Agency Director General Ayodele Oke, who was previously linked to the 2017 Ikoyi cash haul and faced money laundering charges over $43m, £27,800 and N23.8m recovered from a Lagos apartment, as well as a withdrawn EFCC case over $289m allegedly taken from NNPC accounts for “covert operations”. Another is retired Vice Admiral Ibok Ete Ibas, former Sole Administrator of […]

Dangote to Nigerian elites: Skip Rolls Royce, invest in industries

Dangote Group Chairman, Aliko Dangote, has urged wealthy Nigerians to divert money spent on luxury items like Rolls Royce cars and private jets into building industries that create jobs and drive economic growth. Speaking after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, he lamented a culture of conspicuous consumption and recalled that, in earlier years, even presidents used modest official cars, which discouraged elites from outspending the state on luxury. He said anyone who can afford a Rolls Royce should instead establish factories in their communities or anywhere in Nigeria where investment is needed, arguing that many of the private jets crowding local airports could have been productive industrial assets. Dangote stressed that Nigeria’s development hinges on strong local investment in manufacturing and agriculture, backed by a solid banking system, and warned that rapid population growth of […]

S’Court orders FG to fully implement direct LG allocation judgment

The Supreme Court has criticised the Federal Government for failing to fully implement its July 2024 judgment directing that local governments’ allocations from the Federation Account be paid directly to them. In a lead judgment delivered by Justice Mohammed Idris in a suit filed by the Osun State Attorney General over alleged withheld LG funds, the court said there was no credible evidence that the Attorney General of the Federation had taken concrete steps to operationalise the earlier ruling in AG Federation v AG Abia and others, and ordered that the decision be implemented forthwith. While striking out the Osun suit in a 6–1 majority decision, the court held that the Osun AG lacked locus standi to sue on behalf of local governments because councils are constitutionally recognised, autonomous entities with their own legal capacity to sue and be sued, […]
