Accord Crisis Deepens As Faction Picks Bamigbola As Osun Guber Candidate

In a new twist to the unfolding drama within the Accord Party in Osun State, a faction of the party has elected Bamigbola as its governorship candidate for the 2026 election. The primary, held on Sunday, reportedly drew about 300 delegates from across the state who endorsed him as their preferred flagbearer. This move comes only days after Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke was declared winner of another Accord governorship primary for the same 2026 poll. Adeleke, who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party, had earlier secured 145 out of 150 delegate votes in a primary conducted under the supervision of the party’s national leadership. The emergence of two parallel candidates highlights sharp factional splits within the party’s state structure. While the Adeleke camp enjoys visible backing from the national leadership, the Bamigbola group insists its process reflects the […]

Security Forces Eliminate Notorious Bandit Leader Kachalla Naallah In Sokoto

A combined team of security operatives has neutralised a notorious bandit kingpin, Kachalla Naallah, in Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State. The operation is part of intensified campaigns against banditry and kidnapping across the North West region. Naallah, long known for leading violent attacks, kidnappings and cattle rustling in parts of Sokoto and neighbouring states, was tracked down during a targeted raid on his camp. Security sources said he had been on the radar of intelligence agencies for months due to his role in coordinating assaults on rural communities and highways. The latest success comes days after troops of the Nigerian Army’s 8 Division killed another notorious commander, Kachalla Kallamu, a close ally of wanted bandit leader Bello Turji, in Sabon Birni Local Government Area. Rising Insecurity Pushes Nigeria Closer To State Police Model

Debate over state police has entered a new phase in Nigeria as worsening insecurity and growing public frustration force political leaders to consider concrete changes to the country’s policing system. Many analysts now believe the State Police Constitution Alteration Bill has a strong chance of becoming law, given open backing from President Bola Tinubu and several state governors. Supporters of state police argue that a single, centralised Nigeria Police Force can no longer adequately respond to diverse security challenges across a vast and complex country. They say decentralised forces will bring law enforcement closer to communities, improve response times and allow better understanding of local terrain, culture and crime patterns. Security experts quoted in recent discussions outline a likely structure in which each state would establish its own police service under a constitutional framework. These forces are expected to operate […]

Lai Mohammed Urges Nigerians To Back Tinubu On Insecurity

Former Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has called on Nigerians to give stronger support to President Bola Tinubu’s administration in its efforts to tackle insecurity. He said the scale and complexity of today’s security threats make it impossible for government and security agencies to succeed without active citizen cooperation. Speaking in an interview, Mohammed noted that the Tinubu government has introduced several measures to curb terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes. However, he argued that these steps will only produce lasting results if communities share information, resist propaganda and stop shielding criminals. He criticised what he described as a growing tendency to politicise security issues and to downplay government successes while amplifying failures. According to him, such attitudes embolden violent groups and weaken the morale of security personnel risking their lives on the frontlines. Mohammed urged […]

More Money For Govt Yet Nigerians Get Poorer

A new analysis has shown that funds shared by the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee to the three tiers of government have surged sharply in the last four years, yet living conditions for most Nigerians keep deteriorating. The report revealed that total FAAC allocations jumped from about N9.18 trillion in 2022 to N10.9 trillion in 2023 and N15.26 trillion in 2024, an increase of roughly 66 percent within two years. Despite this rise in public revenue, poverty indicators remain grim, with more households struggling to afford food, transport, health care and housing. Rising inflation, weak job growth and the impact of subsidy removal have combined to wipe out any potential benefits of higher government earnings for ordinary citizens. Data in the report show that states and local governments have also benefited significantly from the higher inflows, receiving record amounts from FAAC […]

DSS Frees Three Men Wrongly Held Over Banditry Allegations

The Department of State Services has released three men earlier arrested on suspicion of involvement in banditry and kidnapping after a fresh review showed they were wrongly detained. The men were picked up in June 2025 as part of wider security operations targeting banditry networks in the country. A special review panel set up by the DSS examined their case and concluded that investigations did not establish any link between the suspects and the alleged crimes. Following this finding, the Director General of the DSS, Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, ordered their immediate release. The three men, identified as Umar Ibrahim, Alhaji Bello Rabiu and Jaja Sarki Bamo, were also granted financial compensation approved by the DSS leadership. The payment is intended to acknowledge the error in their arrest and to support their reintegration after months in custody. Security sources indicated that […]

Supreme Court Restores Death Sentence For Maryam Sanda

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has affirmed the death sentence imposed on Maryam Sanda for the murder of her husband, Bilyaminu Bello, and voided the federal government’s decision that had reduced her punishment to 12 years in prison. The court ruled that the executive lacked the constitutional power to alter a final judgment of the Supreme Court in a capital case through prerogative of mercy. In its judgment delivered in Abuja on Friday, the apex court held that the president’s approval of a reduced sentence amounted to an unlawful interference with judicial powers. The justices maintained that once the Supreme Court has given a final decision in a criminal matter, especially one involving the death penalty, that verdict can only be revisited through the court’s own lawful procedures and not by executive action. The court restated that Sanda’s conviction for […]

22 year old held for faking own kidnap to collect N1.5m ransom

Police detectives in Ondo State have arrested a 22 year old truck driver and two friends for allegedly staging his own kidnapping to extort N1.5 million from his family. The suspect, identified as Tobi Oluwatuyi, was reportedly declared missing before his “abductors” began contacting relatives to demand ransom. A police source said a concerned citizen reported the case to the Special Anti Kidnapping Squad after receiving information that Tobi had been taken by suspected kidnappers. As investigations progressed, officers uncovered evidence suggesting the kidnap was faked in collusion with his friends. According to the Ondo State Police Command, preliminary findings showed that Tobi conspired with two accomplices, Jubril Abu, 20, and Segun Oluwatuyi, 21, to stage the abduction. The trio allegedly agreed to demand N1.5 million from Tobi’s unsuspecting family, who believed he had been genuinely kidnapped. Police said the […]
