Edun: Economy stable despite Sokoto airstrikes, markets show strong gains

Finance Minister Wale Edun says Nigeria’s economy remains stable despite the recent joint Nigeria US airstrikes on terrorist camps in Sokoto State. He stressed that such security operations strengthen investor confidence rather than undermine it. Edun explained that the precise, intelligence led strikes targeted threats to national safety and economic activity, distinguishing them from actions that could destabilise markets. He noted that security and economic stability are interconnected, with every effort to protect citizens being inherently pro growth and pro investment. Under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, Nigeria recorded 3.98% GDP growth in Q3 2025 after 4.23% in Q2, with stronger Q4 performance expected. Inflation has fallen below 15% for the seventh straight month due to effective fiscal and monetary policies. Nigeria’s financial markets are operating smoothly with credit upgrades from Moody’s, Fitch and S&P validating reform efforts. Jimoh Ibrahim: modern sovereignty rests on cooperation, not isolation

Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, who represents Ondo South and is a scholar of modern war studies, says no country today enjoys absolute sovereignty and that contemporary security threats demand collaboration and multilateral engagement. In a statement issued in Igbotako, Ondo State, he defended President Bola Tinubu’s reliance on international partnerships to tackle Nigeria’s insecurity as consistent with global democratic practice. Ibrahim cited the United States’ response to the September 11, 2001 attacks to argue that even the world’s most powerful states depend on allies. He recalled that Operation Enduring Freedom involved extensive support from countries such as the UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland, Russia and New Zealand through troops, aircraft, naval assets and intelligence sharing. He said transnational threats like terrorism, cybercrime and pandemics are borderless and cannot be contained by one nation acting alone. If absolute sovereignty were truly […]

Expert urges FG to adopt AI to transform public service

Data scientist Gbolahan Temilorun has called on the Federal Government to make Artificial Intelligence a core part of ongoing public service reforms, arguing that it can boost efficiency, transparency and citizen engagement across ministries and agencies. He said rising public expectations, rapid population growth and limited resources mean Nigeria must embrace smarter ways of governing or risk falling behind countries already modernising with AI. Temilorun explained that AI refers to computer systems capable of tasks such as decision making, pattern recognition and language processing, which can help governments respond faster and allocate resources more effectively. When embedded in public service delivery, he noted, AI can reduce delays, improve accountability and cut back on manual, fragmented processes that slow down service to citizens. One immediate use case he cited is intelligent digital reporting platforms that allow citizens to report damaged roads, […]

Taraba Assembly denies Speaker shared N1,000 Christmas gift to constituents

The Taraba State House of Assembly and the Zing Watch Group have denied reports that Speaker John Bonzena gave just N1,000 each to constituents as a Christmas gift. Instead, they alleged the Speaker personally handed out N1,000 per person, prompting criticism online and in local media. In separate statements on Saturday, both the Assembly and Zing Watch Group clarified that the N1,000 gesture was meant for children and young ladies living around Bonzena’s Jalingo residence, not visiting constituents. They explained that the Speaker’s main Christmas event for constituents was […]

He added that entrusting governance roles to young people shows the president’s confidence in their capacity and signals a positive shift in national leadership. The SERHA leader also commended Tinubu for initiatives targeted at the Southeast, especially the creation of the Southeast Development Commission, which he said reflects a commitment to inclusive development.
