Stop fueling religious division, Muslim League tells foreign critics of Tinubu govt

A Muslim advocacy group, the Muslim League Unity Group, has warned foreign based actors against what it calls attempts to inflame religious tensions in Nigeria through misinformation and politically motivated narratives. In a statement jointly signed by Professors Ahmed Umar Daudu and Yunusa Bala Maikafi, the group accused some international Christian organisations, particularly in the United States, of circulating “doctored reports” about alleged persecution of Christians under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. It warned that such claims risk deepening distrust and unnecessary division among Nigerians who have historically lived together peacefully despite their different faiths. The group criticised recent comments attributed to United States Senator Ted Cruz, who was reported to have alleged attacks on Christian schools and places of worship by Muslims in Nigeria. It said the remarks form part of a broader agenda to incite division and promote […]

Nigeria’s food system fragile despite huge potential, FAO warns

The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has warned that Nigeria’s food system remains fragile and under severe strain despite the country’s vast agricultural potential. Speaking at the 2026 Vanguard Economic Discourse in Lagos, FAO Representative in Nigeria Dominique Koffy Kouacou said climate shocks, conflict, high input costs and policy gaps are combining to undermine food production and access for millions of Nigerians. He noted that the situation is particularly dire for smallholder farmers, who face rising production costs at the same time as consumers confront soaring food prices. Kouacou recalled that recent food security assessments projected tens of millions of Nigerians could face high levels of food insecurity without sustained interventions, warning that the country’s agrifood system is “stressed and vulnerable” to further shocks. Despite these challenges, he stressed that Nigeria has no business being food insecure given its vast […]

Supreme Court reserves judgment in David Mark’s appeal on ADC leadership tussle

The Supreme Court has reserved judgment in an appeal filed by a factional National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) over the party’s leadership dispute. A five member panel of the apex court headed by Justice Mohammed Garba announced on Wednesday that the date for the judgment would be communicated to lawyers representing all parties in the case. The decision followed the adoption of briefs by counsel, who each urged the court to grant the reliefs sought by their clients. The appeal, marked SC/CV/180/2026, was lodged by David Mark and challenges the March 12 judgment of the Court of Appeal. The appellate court had dismissed his appeal against a September 4, 2025 ruling by Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, Abuja, which refused to grant injunctive reliefs sought in an ex parte application filed by ADC chieftain […]

El Rufai to remain in ICPC custody as court shifts bail ruling to June

Former Kaduna State governor Nasir Ahmad El Rufai will remain in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) after a Kaduna State High Court adjourned ruling on his bail application to the first week of June. Justice Darius Khobo gave the ruling on Tuesday during the resumed hearing of El Rufai’s trial on an amended nine count charge bordering on alleged fraud, abuse of office and corruption. The ICPC had earlier reviewed the case and left the former governor as the sole defendant in the matter. Proceedings focused on arguments for and against granting bail, with prosecutors opposing the application on the grounds that El Rufai could interfere with ongoing investigations if released. The court agreed to defer its decision and ordered that he be remanded in ICPC custody pending the determination of the […]

Presidency defends troops’ record highlights gains in anti terror war

The Presidency has rejected growing criticism of Nigeria’s security situation and insisted that the armed forces are making steady progress against terrorists, bandits and other criminal groups across the country. In a statement released on Tuesday, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga said recent military operations in different regions show that troops are degrading criminal networks and rescuing victims despite ongoing challenges. He argued that isolated attacks often dominate public debate and tend to overshadow consistent successes recorded on the ground. Onanuga said operational reports indicate intensified offensives against insurgents, kidnappers, militias and other non state actors, leading to multiple rescues, arrests and neutralisation of threats. He added that the sacrifices of personnel, including those who have paid the supreme price, are frequently downplayed in public conversations. He cited recent operations in Benue State, where […]

Ex minister Uche Nnaji UNN move to settle certificate case out of court

Former Minister of Innovation Science and Technology Uche Nnaji and the University of Nigeria Nsukka have agreed to explore an out of court settlement in the case over alleged certificate forgery. Nnaji had sued UNN and other parties at the Federal High Court in Abuja to stop the university from releasing his academic records following media reports that he forged his degree and NYSC certificates. He therefore asked for an adjournment to allow time for the talks. Lawyers representing the Minister of Education and the National Universities Commission said they were only learning of the settlement move in court but did not oppose the request.
