Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have arrested elderly suspects described as grandpas for alleged drug trafficking in Abia and Ekiti states. The agency said the arrests were made during separate operations targeting the supply and distribution of hard drugs in both states. In Abia State, NDLEA officers apprehended an elderly suspect during a cartel raid linked to the trafficking of methamphetamine and other illicit substances. The operation followed intelligence that the area was being used as a base for storing and moving drugs to other parts of the country. Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu has denied claims that he disrespected the Olubadan of Ibadanland, describing the allegation as false, malicious and aimed at damaging his reputation. He said at no point during his recent address in Ibadan did he insult, abuse or show any form of disrespect to the revered traditional institution. Obi, Kwankwaso set to dump ADC for NDC

Former presidential candidates Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso are set to leave the African Democratic Congress and join the Nigeria Democratic Congress as opposition realignment gathers pace ahead of the 2027 elections. Key figures in the Kwankwasiyya movement say talks with NDC leaders are now at an advanced stage, with only minor details left to be resolved. According to leaders of the Obi Kwankwaso alliance, often called the OK Movement, the decision follows growing uncertainty over the legal and leadership situation in the ADC. They fear that ongoing court cases and internal disputes could weaken the party’s ability to serve as a stable platform for a broad opposition coalition. A prominent Kwankwasiyya chieftain, Saifullahi Mohammed, disclosed that stakeholders from all 44 local government areas of Kano State met at Kwankwaso’s residence and unanimously endorsed the move to the NDC. NAF airstrikes destroy terrorist base in North-East

The Nigerian Air Force has announced that its air component has destroyed a major terrorist base in the North-East through precision airstrikes. The operation is part of ongoing efforts to weaken terrorist networks, support ground troops and restore peace to affected communities. According to a statement from NAF authorities, the strike was carried out after intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions identified the location as an active insurgent hideout and logistics hub. Terrorists were seen moving along concealed tracks into structures hidden under thick vegetation, confirming the area as a deliberately concealed enclave. Following this positive identification, NAF aircraft launched a coordinated attack on the site, engaging key buildings and storage points with onboard munitions. The bombardment destroyed several structures believed to house fighters, weapons, fuel and other supplies used to support attacks in the region. NAF officials said the airstrikes […]

FG warns Nigerians on fake diplomatic recruitment scams

The Federal Government has warned Nigerians to beware of fake diplomatic recruitment schemes and fraudulent ambassadorial offers circulating online and offline. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said criminal groups are using fake diplomatic titles, recruitment letters and promises of jobs in foreign missions to defraud and exploit unsuspecting citizens. In a statement issued by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the government raised alarm over individuals and organisations falsely parading themselves as ambassadors or diplomatic envoys. He explained that these groups issue bogus appointment letters, demand large fees for supposed diplomatic postings and sometimes provide fake diplomatic passports, identity cards and vehicle number plates. The ministry stressed that only the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has the constitutional power to appoint and accredit ambassadors. It added that no private organisation, association or individual is allowed to confer diplomatic or […]

Insecurity: US to review aid, humanitarian assistance to Nigeria

The United States government is set to review its financial aid and humanitarian assistance to Nigeria amid growing concerns over insecurity and violence in the country. The move follows new proposals in the US Congress that seek to tie parts of American support to clear security and human rights benchmarks. Lawmakers on the US House Appropriations Committee have advanced a State Department funding bill that would place stricter conditions on assistance to Nigeria. Under the proposed framework, up to 50 per cent of certain funds could be withheld until the US Secretary of State certifies that Nigeria is taking “effective steps” to curb violence and protect civilians. The bill also pushes for stronger accountability measures, including investigations and prosecutions of armed groups and security personnel implicated in abuses. It directs Nigerian authorities to prioritise support for victims, especially internally displaced […]

Supreme Court judgment: Rivers ADC shifts focus to winning 2027 polls

The Rivers State chapter of the African Democratic Congress says it is now fully focused on winning the 2027 general elections after a Supreme Court judgment restored the party’s David Mark led national leadership. The ruling set aside an earlier Court of Appeal order that had asked all factions to maintain the status quo in the party’s leadership crisis. Rivers ADC chairman elect Dr Chukwudi Dimkpa described the Supreme Court decision as a welcome development and a major relief for members. He said the verdict provides a clear and lawful pathway for the party to organise itself and prepare for the next polls. The apex court held that the Court of Appeal acted outside its jurisdiction when it issued fresh directives after already dismissing the appeal before it. Justices of the Supreme Court called the status quo order unnecessary, unwarranted […]

El‑Rufai, seven others face fresh charges over botched ₦10.8b Kaduna CCTV project

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission has filed fresh criminal charges against former Kaduna State governor Nasir El‑Rufai and seven others over an allegedly botched ₦10.8 billion CCTV security project in Kaduna State. Court documents show that the new 11‑count charge was filed at the Federal High Court in Kaduna on 17 April under the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022. ICPC alleges that El‑Rufai unlawfully approved the award of an ₦8.68 billion CCTV contract in December 2015 to Singularity Network Security Limited, a company the commission says lacked the required competence, in breach of procurement laws. The project, meant to provide city‑wide surveillance cameras and related infrastructure, is said to have failed despite billions of naira reportedly released. Others named in the fresh case include former Kaduna government official Jimi Lawal, senior IHS Towers executive […]

May 1 Cartoon: So many things ‘we no go gree’ for

The May 1 Workers’ Day cartoon captures the mood of many Nigerian workers who feel there are now many things they can no longer accept in silence. It reflects growing frustration over poor wages, harsh living conditions and a cost of living crisis that keeps getting worse. In the cartoon, workers are shown voicing their refusal to continue tolerating policies and practices that keep them in poverty. This mirrors current debates about minimum wage, unstable electricity supply and rising fuel prices. The message ties in with wider May Day discussions about insecurity, unsafe workplaces and the casualisation of labour. It suggests that workers want real change, not just yearly speeches and promises that are soon forgotten. By using everyday expressions like “we no go gree,” the cartoon speaks directly to ordinary people in a language they understand. It underlines that […]
