Pension Fund Investment in REITs Soars 418% to ₦77.8bn in H1 2025

Pension fund investments in Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) surged to ₦77.8 billion in the first half of 2025, a massive 417.8% jump from ₦15.03 billion in the same period last year, according to new data from the National Pension Commission (PenCom). The spike reflects growing interest among Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs) in REITs, even as their direct real estate investments fell by 7.4% to ₦255.9 billion from ₦276.4 billion in H1 2024. Analysts attribute the decline to PFAs’ low risk appetite for non-corporate real estate portfolios, citing challenges such as arbitrary revocation of Certificates of Occupancy by state governments and regulatory bottlenecks. REITs—introduced by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in 2007—allow investors to pool funds to buy and manage income-generating properties or mortgage loans. They provide access to real estate returns without the complexities of direct property management. […]

Cooking Gas Price Surge Squeezes Nigerians for Fifth Consecutive Month

For the fifth straight month, Nigerians are facing relentless increases in cooking gas prices, straining household budgets and forcing many to make difficult choices about how — and how often — they cook. “I used to refill my 12.5kg cylinder for about ₦15,000 last year. Now, it’s over ₦21,000,” lamented Blessing Johnson, a 38-year-old tailor and mother of three in Warri, Delta State. “Sometimes I stretch it for two months by cooking less often, or I switch to kerosene. But kerosene is also expensive. It’s like we’re being squeezed from every side.” According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the average cost of refilling a 5kg cylinder of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) rose by 1.92% in June 2025, from ₦8,167.43 in May to ₦8,323.95. While the month-to-month increase appears modest, the year-on-year figure tells a harsher story: prices have […]

EFCC Detains Tambuwal Over Alleged ₦189bn Withdrawals

Former Sokoto State governor and current senator, Waziri Aminu Tambuwal, is in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over what the agency described as “suspicious” withdrawals totaling ₦189.15 billion during his tenure. Tambuwal arrived at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja around 11:30 a.m. on Monday and was immediately ushered into interrogation, with sources indicating he would spend the night in detention. According to EFCC investigators, the withdrawals were made incrementally over six of Tambuwal’s eight years in office, allegedly from three key state accounts — the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) account, the Government House account, and the Secretary to the State Government account. An EFCC fact sheet claims the three accounts received a combined inflow of ₦567.16 billion between January 1, 2015, and August 31, 2021. Of this, ₦189.15 billion was allegedly diverted to government […]

BBNaija S10: Sultana Banned from Alcohol, Bright Morgan Edges Closer to Disqualification

Tensions flared in the Big Brother Naija Season 10 house this week as multiple contestants faced sanctions for breaking house rules. In a stern Tuesday briefing in the lounge, Biggie handed Kuture a final warning for violent conduct after he threatened to disfigure fellow housemate Faith during a heated argument over cigarettes. He was warned that any further aggressive behaviour could lead to immediate eviction. Sultana received a one-week alcohol ban — including at the upcoming Saturday night party — after urinating in housemate Dede’s clothing box, an act Biggie described as “completely unacceptable.” Bright Morgan was given a double strike for misconduct towards Faith, placing him one strike away from automatic disqualification under the show’s three-strike rule. The penalties come amid what Biggie called “a week of escalating tension” in the house, marked by repeated violations of respect, decorum, […]

Northern Politicians Launch Forum to Shape 2027 Election Strategy

A group of prominent northern political figures outside government has formed a new platform aimed at unifying the region’s stance ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election. Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Babachir Lawal revealed the initiative on Monday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today. The group, known as the Nigerian People’s Consultative Political Forum (North), brings together influential northern politicians who are not currently in public office. According to Lawal, the forum emerged from a series of strategy meetings among like-minded leaders concerned about divisions within the region. “We call this the Nigerian People’s Consultative Political Forum, North, in which almost every significant northern politician who is not in government attends our meetings,” he explained. “The idea is to bring unity to the north, study the causes of our disunity, and work out solutions.” […]
