Local Investors Miss Out on Nigeria’s N4.8trn Non-Oil Boom

Nigeria’s non-oil export sector has seen rapid growth, but local investors are losing out to foreign players—mainly from India, China, Lebanon, and Vietnam—who now dominate the trade. According to reports from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), non-oil export earnings surged to N4.8 trillion in the first half of 2025, a 391% rise from N977 billion in the same period of 2021. NEPC described this growth as evidence of President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda.” However, local industry stakeholders say the numbers hide deep challenges. Many argue that the benefits of this diversification are being lost to foreign operators who have stronger financial backing and easier access to funding. Dr. Ojo Ajanaku, President of the National Cashew Association of Nigeria (NCAN), said local exporters are struggling with limited access to loans and high […]

Tinubu Hails GEIL for Pioneering New Crude Export Terminal

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commended Green Energy International Limited (GEIL) for setting a new benchmark in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector with the successful commissioning of its crude oil export terminal in Otakikpo, Rivers State. The terminal, the first built by a Nigerian company and the only one constructed in the country in over five decades, marks a major milestone in Nigeria’s quest to boost crude oil production and enhance local participation in the energy industry. According to the President, the new export facility will provide an efficient evacuation route for marginal and stranded oil fields across the Niger Delta region. This, he said, will unlock billions of barrels of reserves, drive investment, and create significant economic value — key priorities of his administration. Speaking through the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, President Tinubu […]

NAFDAC, NNMDA Partner to Validate Safety and Efficacy of Herbal Medicines

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has partnered with the Nigeria Natural Medicine Development Agency (NNMDA) to conduct clinical trials aimed at scientifically proving the safety and effectiveness of Nigeria’s herbal medicines. NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, announced the partnership in Lagos, describing it as a vital step toward giving global credibility to the country’s indigenous natural remedies. She explained that NAFDAC is determined to move beyond merely listing herbal products to granting full registration for those verified through scientific validation. “We know herbal medicine works, but it’s important to confirm, through clinical trials, how safely it can be used,” Adeyeye said. “Below a certain dose, it may heal; above that, it could harm the liver, kidney, or other organs. The fact that something is natural doesn’t mean it is completely safe.” She noted that […]

LPG Retailers Not to Blame for Gas Price Hike, Says LPGAR

The Liquefied Petroleum Gas Retailers Association of Nigeria (LPGAR) has said that gas retailers are not responsible for the current increase in the price and scarcity of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), also known as cooking gas. In a statement issued on Saturday in Lagos, the Chairman of LPGAR under the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), Mr. Ayobami Olarinoye, said the rising cost of LPG is caused by supply challenges, not manipulation by retailers. “The recent scarcity and price spike have brought hardship to many Nigerian homes and businesses. We understand this pain, but retailers should not be blamed,” Olarinoye said. His statement followed claims by the president of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM), who accused retailers of contributing to the price surge. Olarinoye described the allegation as “unfair and misleading,” explaining that […]

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has denied allegations that it disobeyed a Federal High Court order concerning the leadership of the Action Alliance (AA) party. In a statement, the commission described the reports as "misleading and mischievous," asserting that it has fully complied with the judgment. INEC explained that it filed compliance documents and updated its website to recognize the party's executive as directed. The commission clarified that it intentionally omitted the name of a specific chairman, Rufai Omoaje, because his removal is the subject of a pending Supreme Court appeal.
