The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in collaboration with the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons has successfully repatriated 497 stranded Nigerian migrants from the Niger Republic to Nigeria.
The returnees were brought back from Niamey, the capital of Niger Republic, through a coordinated voluntary repatriation programme supported by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM). They arrived at the border and were received by emergency officials from their respective states together with representatives of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and IDPs, the Nigeria Red Cross and security agencies.
Among those repatriated were adult males, adult females and children who had left Nigeria to seek greener pastures in various European countries but could not afford to return when their journey became frustrated. Many of them were stranded in Niger Republic after being turned back or unable to proceed further along the migration route.
The returnees came from several Nigerian states including Kano, Jigawa, Katsina, Niger, Taraba, Adamawa, Enugu, Sokoto, Ebonyi, Gombe, Plateau, Delta, Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory Abuja. Authorities are working to ensure that each returnee is handed over to their state of origin for proper documentation and reintegration support.
NEMA officials have said the returnees would be trained on various skills and provided with seed capital to enable them to become self-reliant and avoid falling into the trap of irregular migration again. The agency is also working with state emergency management officials to provide counselling and medical checks for the migrants.
This latest repatriation is part of the Federal Government’s ongoing voluntary return initiative aimed at bringing back stranded Nigerian migrants and supporting their reintegration into society. Previous waves have seen NEMA repatriate over 1,230 Nigerians from the Niger Republic in March 2026 alone, as well as 975 more in 2023 and 522 in March 2026.

Tinubu orders 30 day probe of alleged fake federal agency
