The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of its Cross River State Commander, Chief Narcotics Officer Ogbonna Uzoma, who was found lifeless in his hotel room in Calabar.
The incident occurred on Thursday, September 18, 2025, barely one month after Uzoma assumed duty on August 18.
NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi confirmed the development in a statement on Friday, saying the late commander was due to lead scheduled operations but failed to appear.
“When his officers didn’t hear from him by 9am, they went to his hotel room with hotel staff. Several knocks and calls went unanswered. When the door couldn’t be forced open, an attendant entered through the ceiling to unlock it from inside, where the commander’s lifeless body was discovered,” Babafemi said.
Police, NDLEA launch probe
The Cross River State Police Command was immediately alerted, with the Commissioner of Police personally visiting the scene. Investigations into the cause of death are ongoing.
NDLEA Chairman Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.) has directed Zonal Commander ACGN Mathew Ewah to relocate to Calabar to support the inquiry.
Marwa condoled with Uzoma’s family, saying:
“The Agency stands with the family in this trying moment, and we pray that God will comfort them and grant the departed eternal rest.”
Brief but active tenure
Despite his short time in office, Uzoma was said to have been proactive, immediately engaging his officers in planning operations.
Cross River remains a critical hub for NDLEA operations. In June 2025, the agency destroyed a 30-hectare cannabis farm in the state and reported multiple large-scale drug seizures.
The NDLEA has assured the public of a full investigation into the commander’s death.

Relief for ADC, AP as Appeal Court stops deregistration order
Several opposition political parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Accord Party (AP), have secured temporary relief after the Court of Appeal halted the enforcement of a Federal High Court judgment ordering their deregistration by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Earlier in the week, Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja had ordered INEC to deregister ADC, Accord, Action Alliance (AA), Action Peoples Party (APP) and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) for failing to meet the constitutional thresholds required to remain on the register of political parties. The trial court held that the parties breached Section 225A of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers INEC to deregister political parties that fail to win any elective seat or secure at least 25 per cent of the votes in relevant elections at federal, state or local government […]

Nicki Minaj: Fame made me stop going to church
Global rap superstar Nicki Minaj has revealed that fame changed her relationship with church, explaining that she stopped going when her career started taking off. Minaj explained that she was working on Friday nights and Saturday nights, which meant the last service she could attend would be on Sunday, making regular church attendance difficult. She emphasized that she stopped going to church not because she didn't want to go or did not believe, but because her busy schedule made it impossible to attend consistently. Minaj said she still wanted to go to church during those years, but the demands of her career and the timing of her work commitments prevented her from attending regularly. The rapper later reflected on her spiritual journey during an appearance at Turning Point USA AmericaFest in Phoenix, where she shared how fame and the music […]

Abdulsalami: I told Obasanjo not to contest 1999 presidency
Former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), has disclosed that he advised former President Olusegun Obasanjo not to contest the 1999 presidential election after Obasanjo's release from detention in 1998. When Obasanjo came to see Abdulsalami after his release, Abdulsalami advised him point-blank to abandon the idea of contesting the presidential race. Abdulsalami told him to go home, thank God he was still alive after four years of detention, and forget about becoming President. During the same meeting, Abdulsalami also talked Obasanjo out of filing a lawsuit against the Federal Government over his wrongful imprisonment, warning him that court processes are uncertain. Instead, Abdulsalami offered to explore compensation for the collapse of Obasanjo's business during his years in detention, and Obasanjo agreed not to pursue litigation. Abdulsalami described the encounter as forthright, stating that Obasanjo agreed to think about […]

UN: Africa urgently needs more fish farms to meet rising demand
The United Nations has urged Africa to urgently invest in more fish farms to meet rising demand for aquatic foods, especially as population growth and urbanization continue to increase the need for fish across the continent. According to UN sources, demand for fish is rising due to greater awareness of the health benefits of fish, alongside pressure from declining natural fish stocks and warmer water temperatures that are reducing wild catches. The push for aquaculture development is part of a broader strategy to improve food security and support sustainable economic growth in African countries. Experts say that without expanded fish farming, Africa could face growing supply gaps as wild fisheries become less able to meet consumer needs.

Court orders INEC to deregister ADC, Accord, AA, APP, and ZLP
The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister five political parties: the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Action Peoples Party (APP), Action Alliance (AA), Accord Party (AP), and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP). Justice Peter Lifu delivered the judgement on Monday, ruling that the parties persistently failed to meet the electoral performance thresholds set in Section 225A of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). The suit was filed by the National Forum of Former Legislators at the Federal High Court in Abuja, seeking to compel INEC to deregister parties that do not comply with constitutional requirements under the Electoral Act 2022 and INEC regulations. Among its reliefs, the plaintiff asked the court to declare that INEC has a constitutional duty to deregister parties failing to meet electoral thresholds. The forum also urged the court to […]
