Martinez played Europa League final injured

Article arrow_drop_down

Emiliano Martínez has revealed that he played Aston Villa’s Europa League final victory with a broken finger sustained just minutes before kick-off.

The Argentine goalkeeper suffered the injury during the warm-up ahead of Wednesday’s final against SC Freiburg in Istanbul. Despite the setback, Martínez completed the entire match as Aston Villa F.C. secured a dominant 3-0 victory to lift their first European trophy in 44 years.

Villa’s goals came through Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Buendía and Morgan Rogers, ending the club’s 30-year wait for a major title.

Speaking after the match, Martínez said he noticed immediately that something was wrong with his finger but decided to continue.

“Today I broke my finger during the warm-up and for me, every bad thing brings something good,” he said. “Every time I caught the ball, it went the other way. But these are things you have to go through, and I’m proud to defend Aston Villa.”

Although Villa largely controlled the final, the 33-year-old still produced two saves during the game to help preserve the clean sheet.

The injury did not stop Martínez from fully enjoying the celebrations. After the final whistle, he joined supporters in the stands before lifting manager Unai Emery during the post-match festivities.

The goalkeeper’s condition will now be closely monitored ahead of next month’s World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, with Argentina expected to announce its squad soon.

Martínez has built a reputation for success in major finals throughout his career. His achievements include winning the FA Cup, the FIFA World Cup, two Copa América titles and now the Europa League.

Israel Criticized Over Gaza Flotilla Incident

Several countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Italy and Canada, have condemned Israel’s treatment of pro-Palestinian activists detained after Israeli naval forces intercepted a Gaza-bound aid flotilla in the Mediterranean. The controversy intensified after Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir shared a video on social media showing detained activists kneeling with their hands tied behind their backs while he waved an Israeli flag and addressed them. The footage sparked strong international reactions and criticism from rights groups. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also distanced himself from Ben-Gvir’s conduct, stating that the minister’s actions were “not in line with Israel’s values and norms.” The flotilla, known as the Global Sumud Flotilla, involved more than 50 boats carrying activists from over 40 countries. Organizers said the mission aimed to draw attention to the humanitarian situation in Gaza and deliver […]

US Charges Raúl Castro Over 1996 Shootdown

The United States has announced criminal charges against former Cuban leader Raúl Castro over the 1996 shooting down of two civilian aircraft linked to the Cuban-American group Brothers to the Rescue. US authorities accuse Castro and five other individuals of conspiracy to kill American citizens, destruction of aircraft and multiple murder charges connected to the deaths of four people, including three US citizens. The planes were shot down over waters between Cuba and Florida in February 1996, an incident that sparked international condemnation at the time. Castro, now 94 years old, was serving as Cuba’s defence minister and head of the armed forces when the attack occurred. The charges were announced in Miami by Acting US Attorney General Todd Blanche, who said the United States would continue pursuing accountability for the deaths of Armando Alejandre Jr, Carlos Alberto Costa, Mario […]

Caribbean Islands Fight Over Beach Access

For more than two decades, the Pink Sands Beach Bar on the Caribbean island of Barbuda served as a popular gathering place for residents and visitors. Located along the island’s famous pink shoreline, the small beach bar was known for community events, Sunday relaxation and friendly domino games. Its owner, Miranda Beazer, says everything changed in 2017 when Hurricane Irma devastated Barbuda and forced the evacuation of the island’s entire population to neighbouring Antigua. The hurricane destroyed both her bar and her home. “It was heartbreaking. Almost nobody escaped the damage,” she recalls. After the disaster, Miranda planned to rebuild, but her husband later passed away, making the process even more difficult. Soon after, foreign investors reportedly began offering large sums of money for her beachfront property. She refused every offer. “I’m not interested in selling,” she says. “I want […]

India Food Safety Fears Drive Homemade Trend

In her kitchen in New Delhi, 55-year-old Nirmal Rao carefully spreads boiled turmeric under the sun before grinding it into powder at home. Like many middle-class Indians, she has started preparing basic food ingredients herself because she no longer fully trusts products sold in local markets. “We shouldn’t have to do this, but it’s becoming difficult to trust what we buy,” she says while filling jars with homemade turmeric powder. Across several Indian cities, more families are quietly returning to traditional food preparation methods. Many now grind spices manually, make paneer at home, or purchase grains directly from farmers. The growing trend is largely driven by concerns over food safety and adulteration. Official figures indicate that between 2022 and 2025, nearly one out of every six food samples tested by authorities failed to meet safety standards. During the same period, […]
