Martinez played Europa League final injured

Article arrow_drop_down

Emiliano Martínez has revealed that he played Aston Villa’s Europa League final victory with a broken finger sustained just minutes before kick-off.

The Argentine goalkeeper suffered the injury during the warm-up ahead of Wednesday’s final against SC Freiburg in Istanbul. Despite the setback, Martínez completed the entire match as Aston Villa F.C. secured a dominant 3-0 victory to lift their first European trophy in 44 years.

Villa’s goals came through Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Buendía and Morgan Rogers, ending the club’s 30-year wait for a major title.

Speaking after the match, Martínez said he noticed immediately that something was wrong with his finger but decided to continue.

“Today I broke my finger during the warm-up and for me, every bad thing brings something good,” he said. “Every time I caught the ball, it went the other way. But these are things you have to go through, and I’m proud to defend Aston Villa.”

Although Villa largely controlled the final, the 33-year-old still produced two saves during the game to help preserve the clean sheet.

The injury did not stop Martínez from fully enjoying the celebrations. After the final whistle, he joined supporters in the stands before lifting manager Unai Emery during the post-match festivities.

The goalkeeper’s condition will now be closely monitored ahead of next month’s World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, with Argentina expected to announce its squad soon.

Martínez has built a reputation for success in major finals throughout his career. His achievements include winning the FA Cup, the FIFA World Cup, two Copa América titles and now the Europa League.

FIFA Clears Balogun to Face Belgium

The decision to overturn the suspension of United States forward Folarin Balogun has sparked debate after FIFA confirmed he will be available for his country's Round of 16 clash against Belgium at the FIFA World Cup. Balogun had been sent off during the United States' victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina in the Round of 32, a dismissal that would normally result in an automatic one-match suspension. However, FIFA's disciplinary committee reversed the sanction, allowing the striker to return immediately. The ruling is considered highly unusual. Throughout World Cup history, players who receive red cards have almost always served the mandatory suspension. Of the 189 red cards recorded in the tournament's history, only two players have avoided missing the following match. The first instance dates back to the 1962 World Cup, when Brazil's Garrincha was dismissed in the semi-final against Chile but was […]

As the tremors intensified, she rushed outside with everyone else before immediately thinking about her daughter, Fabiana, who had been home alone. Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter has questioned the role of political influence in football after reports that a phone call from Donald Trump helped trigger a review of a red card decision involving Folarin Balogun. Blatter said football decisions should be based on rules and evidence rather than political pressure. He argued that the game must remain independent from outside influence. His comments came after FIFA faced criticism over the reversal of a disciplinary decision involving the United States striker. The move has sparked debate about whether political leaders should have any role in football matters. Blatter warned that football should not become a place where political power can change sporting decisions. He said such matters should be handled by officials and independent disciplinary bodies. The development has drawn attention because of the sensitivity around FIFA’s independence and the wider […]
