More than 200 Iranian sailors who had been stranded in Sri Lanka following a naval incident have now returned home after spending over a month in the country.
According to Deputy Defence Minister Aruna Jayasekara, a total of 238 sailors were repatriated. This included 32 crew members rescued from the Iris Dena and 206 from the Irins Bushehr. The group departed on Tuesday night after being flown out of Sri Lanka.
The incident began on 4 March, when the Iris Dena sank approximately 40 kilometres off Sri Lanka’s southern coast after being struck by a torpedo reportedly launched from a US submarine. The attack resulted in the deaths of 104 sailors.
The following day, Sri Lankan authorities took control of the Irins Bushehr after it requested permission to dock due to engine failure. The vessel was allowed into port on humanitarian grounds after several hours of deliberation.
During their stay, the stranded sailors were granted 30-day visas and accommodated in military facilities, including navy and air force camps.
Footage released by the United States Department of Defense showed a vessel being hit and exploding after the strike. Meanwhile, the bodies of 84 victims recovered from the sinking were later returned to Iran on a chartered flight.
The sinking of the Iris Dena occurred in international waters just days after the escalation of the US-Israeli war with Iran, marking a significant expansion of the conflict. In response, Iran has carried out retaliatory strikes across parts of the Middle East, targeting countries allied with the United States.
Despite the evacuation, around 15 Iranian sailors are expected to remain in Sri Lanka to operate the Irins Bushehr, which is currently anchored off the northeastern port of Trincomalee.
Sri Lanka’s decision to assist the sailors reflects its longstanding policy of neutrality. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake stated that the country acted to uphold humanitarian values while maintaining its non-aligned stance.
Since gaining independence in 1948, Sri Lanka has maintained diplomatic and economic relations with both Iran and the United States, balancing its foreign policy between the two nations.

Meta to cut 8,000 jobs amid AI push
Meta is preparing a major round of layoffs, with thousands of employees expected to lose their jobs next month as the company ramps up investment in artificial intelligence (AI). According to an internal memo shared with staff, the tech giant plans to cut about 10% of its workforce, representing roughly 8,000 positions. In addition, the company will halt recruitment for several thousand open roles, further reducing its overall headcount. This restructuring is largely driven by a sharp increase in spending on AI. Meta is expected to allocate around $135 billion to AI projects this year alone, an amount comparable to its total investment in the field over the past three years combined. The shift reflects the company’s ambition to accelerate development of advanced AI systems and remain competitive in the sector. The announcement follows earlier signals from CEO Mark Zuckerberg, […]

Everest route blocked by massive glacier
A massive block of glacier is currently obstructing the main climbing route on Mount Everest, raising concerns as the peak climbing season begins in Nepal. Positioned just below Camp 1, the ice formation—known as a serac—stands about 30 meters high and has proven impossible to bypass safely. Teams of “icefall doctors,” responsible for securing ropes and ladders along the route, say there is no viable alternative path for now. Their only option is to wait for the ice to naturally weaken and collapse, which they hope will happen within days. This unexpected obstacle has delayed preparations significantly. By this time of year, routes are typically secured up to Camp 3, but work has stalled roughly 600 meters below Camp 1. The delay could compress the already short climbing window, increasing the risk of overcrowding as climbers attempt to summit within […]

The four-day trip, scheduled to begin next week, will include meetings at the White House and an address by the King to Congress. The visit comes at a time of visible tensions between Washington and London, particularly over the ongoing conflict involving Iran. Trump also commented on his relationship with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, suggesting the British leader could improve his standing if he adjusted his policies on immigration and energy. Starmer, however, has maintained that his decisions are guided by national […]

China says it ‘welcomes’ Middle East ceasefire agreement
China has said it “welcomes” the ceasefire agreement reached in the Middle East between the parties to the Iran conflict. “China welcomes relevant parties announcing the reaching of a ceasefire agreement,” foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning told reporters at a regular briefing in Beijing. She expressed hope that all sides would “earnestly implement” the truce, which includes a two‑week halt to strikes and a controlled reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping. China reiterated its long‑standing position that hostilities in the region must stop immediately to prevent further escalation and spillover. Beijing’s foreign ministry said the country supports diplomatic efforts and dialogue to resolve disputes, and backs a greater role for the United Nations and Gulf states in promoting regional security. Foreign Minister Wang Yi previously outlined a framework calling for an immediate ceasefire, protection of civilians and […]

Lilian Afegbai apologises to AMVCA for outburst over snub
Nollywood actress Lilian Afegbai has apologised to the organisers of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards for her earlier outburst over being left out of this year’s nominations. She had previously gone viral for angrily telling them to eat their award after her name was missing from the list. In a new post on her X page, Afegbai admitted that her apology was overdue and that her earlier reaction was disrespectful. She said her words were driven by hurt and disappointment and did not reflect the respect she has for the AMVCA platform and those who work behind the scenes. The actress, who played the character Idia in Kemi Adetiba’s Netflix series To Kill a Monkey, had initially expressed shock at not being nominated for Best Supporting Actress. She argued that her role was one of the most talked about […]

Court orders final forfeiture of $13m linked to Oceangate Engineering
A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the final forfeiture of 13 million dollars linked to Oceangate Engineering Oil and Gas Ltd, a company associated with businesswoman Aisha Achimugu. Justice Emeka Nwite granted the request by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for the money to be permanently forfeited to the Federal Government. In his ruling, Justice Nwite held that neither Oceangate Engineering nor Achimugu was able to prove that the 13 million dollars was legitimately earned. He said there was no credible evidence before the court to support their claim that the funds came from gifts and earnings from oil and gas contracts. The judge rejected arguments by Oceangate’s lawyer, Darlington Ozurumba, who had insisted that the money was lawfully acquired. Ozurumba had argued that the funds were derived from personal gifts to Achimugu and proceeds of genuine […]

Ukraine battles economic pressure amid war
Ukraine’s economic stability has become a crucial but often overlooked front in its ongoing conflict with Russia. Maintaining financial strength is not only essential for sustaining the war effort today but also for securing the country’s long-term future. According to Sergii Marchenko, Ukraine’s finance minister, Kyiv aims to emerge from the conflict as a strong partner for Europe rather than a struggling neighbour. He believes the country’s hard-earned military experience since the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022 could eventually help strengthen Europe’s defence capabilities. Joining the European Union remains a major goal for Ukraine. Financial support from the bloc has played a key role in keeping the economy functioning while bringing the country closer to European integration. A newly approved €90bn loan from the EU is expected to help cover Ukraine’s budget gap over the next two years. […]

Iran tightens security amid fears of protests
Authorities in Tehran have intensified security measures as tensions rise over the possibility of anti-establishment protests. Residents report the installation of multiple checkpoints across the capital, alongside tighter restrictions on internet access and warning messages sent to citizens. According to people who spoke with BBC News, security personnel have set up checkpoints under pedestrian bridges and inside road tunnels. The Fars News Agency said that a number of security personnel were killed when four checkpoints were hit in different districts of Tehran. Meanwhile, the Human Rights Activists News Agency reported that thousands of civilians have died during recent protests, highlighting the scale of unrest that has shaken the country. Many […]
