Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has warned that it will extend the Middle East conflict beyond the region if the United States and Israel resume attacks on Tehran.
The paramilitary group released a strong statement on Wednesday cautioning that continued hostilities against Iran would lead to devastating strikes. According to the semi-official Mehr news agency the Revolutionary Guard said the war would be extended beyond the region and strikes would cause downfall in ways that cannot be foreseen.
The Iran conflict has reached a precarious stalemate over the past few weeks. A ceasefire remains in place as both sides compete for control over the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
About 20 percent of the global oil and liquefied natural gas supply normally passes through this critical waterway. However shipping activities have nearly stopped since the war began on February 28.
The Revolutionary Guard’s threat marks a significant escalation in rhetoric as tensions remain high between Iran and the US Israel alliance. The conflict has already caused widespread disruption to energy supplies and maritime traffic in one of the world most important oil shipping routes.
Both sides continue to vie for dominance while diplomatic efforts to reach a settlement face challenges from aggressive statements and threats of further escalation from all parties involved.
