Eleven Killed in Gaza Amid Ceasefire Strains

Eleven Palestinians were killed in Israeli air strikes in the Gaza Strip on Sunday morning, according to Palestinian civil defence and health officials. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it targeted what it described as terror infrastructure in response to alleged ceasefire violations by Hamas. The military added that militants were killed after emerging from a tunnel into an area of Gaza under Israeli control. The Palestine Red Crescent Society reported that a strike on a tent encampment in northern Gaza killed at least six people, while another strike in the south of the territory left five dead. Israel and Hamas have traded accusations of near-daily violations since a fragile ceasefire took effect on 10 October. The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza says at least 600 people have been killed since the truce began. Earlier this month, local officials reported […]

Europe moves to cut defence reliance on US after Trump’s Greenland push

European leaders say they must build stronger defence capabilities of their own after tensions with Washington over US President Donald Trump’s push to acquire Greenland from Denmark. At the Munich Security Conference, several top officials warned that recent events have crossed “lines that cannot be uncrossed” in transatlantic relations. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Europe will accelerate efforts to develop a more robust “European pillar” inside NATO. The aim is for European countries to take primary responsibility for conventional defence in Europe while the United States continues to provide its nuclear umbrella and support NATO’s mutual defence pledge. Trump’s threats to forcibly annex Greenland and his past attacks on allies over defence spending have deepened doubts about US security guarantees. In response, Denmark and other NATO members have increased their military presence […]

Iran open to nuclear compromises if US agrees to discuss sanctions

Iran has signalled it is ready to consider compromises on its nuclear programme if the United States is willing to discuss lifting economic sanctions. Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht Ravanchi made the comments in an interview with the BBC, saying “the ball is in America’s court” to show it wants a deal. Tehran has long said it is prepared to accept limits on its nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief, but it refuses to tie nuclear talks to other issues such as its missile programme. Takht Ravanchi stressed that any agreement must include sanctions on the negotiating table, given their impact on Iran’s struggling economy. A second round of indirect talks between Iran and the US is expected in Geneva on Tuesday, following earlier contacts in Oman. Takht Ravanchi described the first round as “somewhat positive” but said it […]

Europe welcomes Rubio’s tone but vows to stay more independent

European leaders have broadly welcomed the tone of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s speech on transatlantic ties at the Munich Security Conference, but many say it will not change their push for a more autonomous Europe. In his keynote address, Rubio described the United States as the “offspring of Europe” and called for unity with allies while also criticising them on issues such as defence spending and global governance. A senior French minister said Rubio’s recognition of shared history and common values was positive, but stressed that Europe would still pursue a stronger and more independent role in security and foreign policy. He noted that European countries have heard similar messages from past US administrations and that their long term goal remains to build a resilient, self reliant Europe inside a strong NATO. Another European foreign minister said Rubio’s […]

Queen Camilla Praises Gisèle Pelicot’s Courage

Gisèle Pelicot has described feeling “deeply moved” and “truly honoured” after receiving a personal letter from Queen Camilla, praising her strength in the aftermath of years of abuse. In her message, the Queen commended Ms Pelicot for the “courage, grace and dignity” with which she confronted the crimes committed against her. She wrote that she wished to express her “heartfelt admiration” for the way Ms Pelicot had faced such traumatic experiences. For nearly ten years, Ms Pelicot was repeatedly drugged and raped by her then-husband. During that period, he also arranged for other men he had met online to sexually assault her. In the letter, the Queen said Ms Pelicot had “inspired women across the globe” and created a legacy that would permanently shift perceptions of shame, placing responsibility where it belongs — on perpetrators rather than victims. During the […]

Israel Expands Civil Control in West Bank

A senior Palestinian official has warned that Israel’s latest policy shift in the occupied West Bank could mark a decisive break in already fragile peace efforts. Asma al-Sharabati, acting mayor of Hebron, said new legal measures approved by Israel’s cabinet would effectively sideline Palestinian authorities from urban planning and development decisions — including in areas that were previously administered by the Palestinian Authority. Hebron has long been one of the most sensitive and contested cities in the West Bank. The city is divided into sectors under Palestinian and Israeli control, with Israeli soldiers stationed to protect a small community of settlers living among a much larger Palestinian population. The arrangement dates back to the framework established under the Oslo Accords, which divided responsibilities between the two sides. Under the newly approved measures, Israel will expand its authority beyond military oversight […]

CIA releases Mandarin video to woo disillusioned Chinese soldiers

The CIA has released a new Mandarin language recruitment video aimed at Chinese soldiers amid turmoil in China’s military leadership. The video, titled The Reason for Stepping Forward To Save the Future, was posted on the agency’s YouTube channel. It follows a fictional Chinese officer who becomes disillusioned with his superiors and secretly reaches out to the CIA. In the narration, he says leaders are protecting their own interests rather than the people and that he cannot let their madness shape his daughter’s future. This is the fifth Mandarin language recruitment advert the CIA has put out since late 2024. CIA director John Ratcliffe said the videos have reached many people in China even though YouTube is officially blocked there, as users rely on software tools to bypass internet controls. The campaign comes as the People’s Liberation Army faces instability […]
