The abduction of 25 schoolgirls from Government Girls Comprehensive School, Maga, Kebbi State, left families and residents in shock. Armed bandits invaded the school hostel at night, killed Vice Principal Hassan Makuku in front of his wife, and forced their daughter to show them the hostel entrance. The bandits shot the security guard who resisted and took his phone before storming the hostel. While some girls managed to escape, several families now grieve loved ones lost or abducted.
Mother Amina Hassan Makuku, who witnessed her husband’s killing, shared the traumatic events and described how she refused to follow bandits after they murdered him. Khadija Hassan, her 15-year-old daughter, narrowly escaped being taken. Other mothers, including Aisha Sani, revealed that two of their daughters remain captive. Residents recounted previous attacks in the area, failures by security operatives to act on warnings, and the community’s ongoing fear.
Locals and analysts praised military and vigilante efforts but insisted more must be done. The tragedy sparked urgent calls for security improvement, free education for victims’ children, and comprehensive care for grieving families.
