India has officially submitted its bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, aiming to bring the prestigious event back to the country after a 20-year gap. The proposal designates Ahmedabad as the host city for the centenary edition of the Games, celebrating 100 years of Commonwealth sporting tradition.
A delegation representing the Commonwealth Games Association of India and the Government of Gujarat formally presented the bid to Dr. Donald Rukare, President of Commonwealth Sport, in London on Saturday, as reported by Reuters.
Sustainable and Inclusive Vision
Speaking after the submission, Gujarat Sports Minister Harsh Sanghavi highlighted the bid’s focus on sustainability and inclusivity. He emphasized that submitting the proposal on National Sports Day underscores India’s deep sporting heritage while defining a vision for future generations.
“Our approach is inspired by the ancient principle of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’—the world is one family—and ‘Atithi Devo Bhava,’ which means ‘the guest is divine,’” Sanghavi said, stressing India’s welcoming and inclusive approach to hosting the Games.
Commitment to the Commonwealth Family
Indian Olympic Association Executive Council member Harpal Singh called the bid a “proud moment” for India. He emphasized that the country’s bid is not just about hosting a sporting event, but about making a long-term commitment to the Commonwealth family.
“This bid reflects our commitment to delivering Games that are athlete-centered, inclusive, sustainable, and future-facing,” Singh said. He added that the goal is to honor the past while preparing for the future, ensuring the Games remain relevant and impactful for the next century.
A Milestone for India’s Olympic Ambitions
Singh also framed the bid as a stepping stone towards India’s long-term goal of hosting the 2036 Olympic Games. “Successfully hosting the Commonwealth Games will demonstrate India’s capability, enhance our international credibility, and lay a solid foundation for the Olympic journey ahead,” he said.
Building Future Champions
Indian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Vikram Doraiswami, emphasized India’s ongoing efforts to develop world-class sports infrastructure and nurture young talent. He highlighted the government’s partnerships with the private sector to build future champions and strengthen India’s position as a leading sporting nation.
The federal government has already given its approval for signing the Host Collaboration Agreement (HCA) and provided the necessary guarantees from relevant ministries, further cementing India’s commitment to bringing the 2030 Commonwealth Games to Ahmedabad.
