France urges citizens to leave Mali fast
France has called on its nationals to leave Mali without delay following a surge in coordinated attacks involving separatist fighters and Islamist militants. In an updated advisory, the French government warned that the security situation has become “extremely volatile” and urged citizens to avoid all travel to the country. Those still in Mali have been advised to depart using available commercial flights while limiting movement and following local authorities’ instructions. The warning comes after a wave of violence over the weekend, with explosions and gunfire reported in several areas, including the capital, Bamako. In the town of Kati, Defence Minister Sadio Camara was reportedly killed in a suicide attack, while in the north, separatist forces seized control of Kidal. Despite the escalation, Mali’s military leader Assimi Goïta stated that the situation remains under control. He said the army had inflicted […]

US court limits race use in voting maps
The US Supreme Court has issued a major ruling that limits how lawmakers can use race when drawing electoral districts, a decision likely to influence political dynamics across the southern United States. In a 6–3 judgment, the court’s conservative majority backed a legal challenge against newly drawn voting maps in Louisiana. These maps had been created to comply with protections under the Voting Rights Act, which aims to prevent racial discrimination in elections. Writing for the majority, Justice Samuel Alito argued that past interpretations of the law had, in some cases, pushed states toward race-based decisions that conflict with constitutional principles. The plaintiffs—primarily white voters—contended that factoring race into district boundaries violated equal protection guarantees. While the court stopped short of declaring the Voting Rights Act provision unconstitutional, it introduced a stricter standard for future cases. Individuals challenging electoral maps […]

King Charles visit tests UK-US ties
The official visit of King Charles III to the United States delivered polished speeches, warm gestures and carefully staged ceremonies. But beyond the symbolism, a key question remains: will this diplomatic moment lead to tangible political progress? Ahead of the visit, British officials were realistic about its limits. Deep disagreements between London and Washington—ranging from trade and NATO commitments to Ukraine and Iran—were not expected to disappear overnight. Tensions had also been fuelled by past remarks from Donald Trump directed at UK leadership. Rather than aiming for a reset, diplomats saw the visit as an opportunity to ease tensions and improve dialogue. Former UK ambassador David Manning described the King as a “stabilising force” capable of creating space for renewed engagement on complex issues. Through carefully crafted speeches, King Charles struck a tone of respect and unity. He praised American […]

Russia scales back Victory Day parade in Moscow
Russia has decided to scale down its annual Victory Day parade scheduled for 9 May in Moscow, citing heightened security concerns linked to what officials describe as threats from Ukraine. According to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, authorities are implementing strict measures to reduce potential risks. Despite the changes, the ceremony will still take place at Red Square, a symbolic location for the commemoration. Russia’s defence ministry confirmed that this year’s parade will not include heavy military equipment or cadets from traditional military academies. Instead, the event will feature personnel from various branches of the armed forces along with an aerial display. The adjustments reflect what officials describe as the current operational environment. The decision comes as Ukraine has stepped up strikes deep inside Russian territory, more than four years into the ongoing conflict. Kyiv maintains that its actions target military […]

Young made his England debut in 2007 and went on to win 39 caps for the national team, scoring seven goals. Galatasaray declare Osimhen ‘untouchable’
Galatasaray have slammed the door on potential suitors for Victor Osimhen, declaring the Nigerian striker “untouchable” after his explosive impact in Turkey. The club has made it clear that they have no plans to entertain offers for the Super Eagles star this summer. Osimhen joined Galatasaray on loan and has quickly become the team’s main attacking threat, delivering goals and big game performances, including in the Istanbul derby against Fenerbahce. His form has attracted reported interest from top European clubs, including Arsenal and Real Madrid. Club insiders quoted in Turkish and Nigerian media say Galatasaray’s board views Osimhen as central to their domestic and European ambitions next season. They believe letting him leave now would weaken the squad and send the wrong message to supporters. Galatasaray officials are also said to be exploring ways to extend his stay beyond the […]

Burnley boss Parker leaves club after Premier League relegation
Burnley head coach Scott Parker has left the club by mutual consent, just days after their relegation from the Premier League was confirmed. The Clarets will return to the Championship next season after a poor campaign that saw them win only four of their first 34 league matches. The team collected just one point from their last eight league games, leaving them 19th in the table with 20 points. In a statement, Burnley said Parker and the board had agreed that his time at Turf Moor should come to an end following talks after relegation was confirmed. PSG edge Bayern in nine goal Champions League semi final classic
Paris Saint Germain took a narrow lead in their Champions League semi final after beating Bayern Munich 5 4 in a wild first leg at the Parc des Princes. The nine goal thriller was the highest scoring semi final in the history of the competition. Bayern struck first when Harry Kane converted a penalty in the 17th minute. PSG hit back through a brilliant Khvicha Kvaratskhelia strike and a Joao Neves header to lead 2 1, before Michael Olise levelled again for the German side. In first half stoppage time, Ousmane Dembele restored PSG’s advantage from the penalty spot after a handball decision against Alphonso Davies that Bayern strongly protested. That made it 3 2 at the break in a breathless opening 45 minutes. PSG then appeared to take full control early in the second half. Kvaratskhelia and Dembele each […]

I can score against any team, says Osimhen
Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen says he believes he can score against any team in the world and that finding the net is a job he does very well. He spoke after his decisive performance for Galatasaray in the heated Istanbul derby against Fenerbahce. Osimhen recently returned from a fractured arm but still managed to score the opening goal in Galatasaray’s 3 0 win over their rivals. He finished calmly from a Mario Lemina pass, underlining his reputation as one of Europe’s most dangerous forwards. The 2023 CAF Player of the Year said his confidence comes from hard work and belief in his own ability. He stressed that as a striker he is expected to deliver in big games and that he embraces that responsibility. Osimhen added that while he is proud of his goals, the most important thing is […]

World Cup gets cash boost as FIFA plans tough red card rules
FIFA has approved a major increase in World Cup cash distributions while also backing tougher red card rules ahead of this year’s tournament. The decisions were taken at a meeting of the FIFA Council in Vancouver, held before the organisation’s annual congress. Under the new plan, total World Cup payments to participating teams will rise to nearly 900 million dollars, covering prize money, preparation funds and club compensation. The four year World Cup cycle is projected to generate around 13 billion dollars for FIFA, allowing it to boost support to national associations. Prize money for the 2026 World Cup had already been set at about 655 million dollars, around 50 percent higher than at the 2022 tournament in Qatar. The champions are due to earn 50 million dollars, with 33 million dollars for the runners up and 9 million dollars […]
